Team USA Announces 555-Member Team for 2016 Rio Olympics
As the sports world prepares to converge on Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympics, the United States has finalized its roster.
Per the United States Olympic Committee, there are 555 members on this year's U.S. Olympic team, including 263 men and 292 women across 27 sports.
The USOC noted the 292 female participants represent a new Olympic record. It's only the second time the U.S. roster has had more women than men. USOC CEO Scott Blackmun commended the diverse set of competitors who will represent Team USA:
"Sport, and the Olympic Movement in particular, has always had a unique ability to inspire our nation and unite the world. These Olympic Games will be no different in that regard as 555 Americans rise to their best and make our nation proud. I am especially excited for the historic achievement of our women's delegation, which is a true testament to the strength and growing number of women's sport opportunities in the United States.
"
This year's American squad also features 191 athletes making at least their second appearance in the Olympics. Equestrian Phillip Dutton and shooters Emil Milev and Kim Rhode are the longest-tenured, as each will be making their sixth appearance.
Michael Phelps and Venus Williams are among the athletes who will be competing in their fifth Games. Phelps also holds the distinction of being the most decorated Olympian ever with 22 medals. Williams, her sister Serena Williams and Allyson Felix carry the torch on the women's side with four career gold medals.
The United States has won the most gold and total medals in three of the four Summer Olympics since 2000. A loaded roster of new and returning talent is poised to continue that run in Rio when the Games start Aug. 5.
