Senior British Open 2016: Leaderboard Scores and Highlights from Friday

Gianni VerschuerenJul 22, 2016

Kohki Idoki and Joe Durant have a one-shot lead over a host of players after the second day of the 2016 Senior British Open. The former finished his second round with a superb score of five-under 67 at the notoriously tricky Carnoustie course in Scotland, while Durant finished four under to tie him at the top of the leaderboard.

Carnoustie was kind to the field on Friday, as the majority of the top contenders finished with scores of 70 or under. Olin Browne, who is one of the players just behind the leaders, played a flawless round of six under, and Mark McNulty managed a hole-in-one on the 13th.

Recap

Idoki played a flawless front nine and finished strongly on the 18th, holing a bunker shot for birdie, to finish with a score of five under. He recorded two bogeys on the back nine, including a poor effort at the 17th that had him in danger of coughing up the lead, but his superb recovery on the final hole saved his round.

Durant was among the late starters and powered his way up the leaderboard with a fine back nine, making four birdies.

They lead a handful of players sitting on six under, including Brown and Sweden's Jesper Parnevik, who is hoping to become the third consecutive Swede to win the Senior British Open.

Parnevik's fine round included a single birdie and a magnificent eagle on the 14th. Per the European Tour's official website, he later said he didn't expect to be competing for the title at his point: “I had no expectation whatever coming into this week. I hurt my back a few weeks ago and hadn’t hit a drive for about a month. Maybe I am just inspired by what Henrik [Stenson] did at Troon last week.”

Browne stole the show early with a round of six under, becoming the first player to manage that feat, per the Senior Tour's official Twitter account:

He birdied four of the first five holes to set the pace, and while he slowed down on the back nine, the American's form appears excellent heading into moving day.

Things are no different for Peter Fowler, who recorded a second round of three under to join the crowd tied for third place. A run of four straight birdies on the back nine put him in an excellent position after he finished the front nine at one over.

His short game was on point, and the Golf Channel shared this fantastic make:

Tom Byrum and Carlos Franco also sit one shot behind Idoki and Durant after two rounds, with both shooting a round of three under on Friday.

McNulty made the shot of the day, holing the 13th, but unfortunately for the Irishman, it was one of the few highlights of his day. The ace came right after he made birdie on the 12th, but he also recorded four bogeys on the back nine and two more on the front nine to finish with a score of two over.
