Per Sam Williams for their official website, Liverpool confirmed he had been signed on a free transfer after leaving Augsburg at the conclusion of the 2015-16 campaign, but the club did not specify the length of his "short-term deal."
The 39-year-old, who has had spells with Arsenal and Juventus during his career that now spans 14 different clubs, said:
"I’ve still got something left, for sure, but obviously it’s probably not the time for me to push for the next three or four years to get a place in the goal. Because time says it’s not possible to play 50 games a year. But if I’m called up, I’m definitely there for games, I will play. And I’ll definitely be in the changing room every game, giving my input; I hope, even if it’s only a couple of per cent, it will do the rest.
"
Manninger has also represented Austria 34 times, his last outing for them coming in 2009.
Per James Carroll for the Reds' website, manager Jurgen Klopp said: "He brings us great experience and I know that as a person he is someone who every day will show what a great professional he is and will be important for the squad."
The German also clarified the move for another reserve goalkeeper was brought about due to the club's inability to recall any of the young stoppers who have been sent out on loan to another English team following a rule change.
This is Anfield confirmed the shirt number he will don:
Bleacher Report UK's Karl Matchett summarised the reaction to Manninger's signing and speculated on what his arrival means for Reds youngster Shamal George—the goalkeeper who was used as a substitute up front in Wednesday's friendly with Huddersfield Town:
Meanwhile, OptaJoe attempted to offer encouragement to Liverpool fans in case Manninger does find himself running out at Anfield:
The Austrian will be behind Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet in the pecking order at Liverpool.
Though he has spent a fair amount of his career as a back-up goalkeeper, he has made 137 appearances in Serie A, 45 in the Bundesliga and 39 in the Premier League, so he's not lacking for experience.
In the unlikely event he's called upon, Manninger should be a solid enough short-term option.
