WWE SmackDown Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from WWE Draft

Erik BeastonJul 19, 2016

The WWE draft shook the wrestling world to its core Tuesday night, dividing Superstars between Raw and SmackDown as part of the company's latest attempt at a brand extension.

Some of the promotion's most notable stars ended up in better situations than others. Those Superstars emerged as the night's biggest winners, their futures shining brightest thanks to their destinations.

Others were not so lucky. The night's biggest losers saw their stature weakened either by their placement or positions in the draft.

Winner: Finn Balor

The former NXT champion was the first new face the revolutionary brand drafted, as Raw made him one of its top five picks.

General manager Mick Foley explicitly mentioned that he was looking to the future with his selection of Balor, suggesting The Demon will play a key role on WWE's flagship television show in the coming months.

Balor has been the face of NXT since the moment he arrived. He was a consistent presence in the main event and a highly marketable persona whose alter ego captivated fans.

The 34-year-old continuously demonstrated his worth between the ropes, emerging as a virtuoso performer whose matches with Kevin Owens, Shinsuke Nakamura, Neville and Samoa Joe laid the foundation for future competitors to build on.

Now a member of Raw and selected before stars such as Roman Reigns and John Cena, Balor will have the opportunity to prove his worth in front of a new audience possibly unfamiliar with his previous exploits.

Loser: Kevin Owens

It appeared as though Owens was a slam-dunk top-10 pick, a Superstar who could be a cornerstone for either Raw or SmackDown. Instead, he was a draft afterthought, plummeting to the 18th overall pick.

Despite being a workhorse who has consistently appeared on both shows, Owens has long been one step below the main event. Yet when it came time to reward his hard work and constant show-stealing performances, he was not as valued as midcard champion Rusev, veteran performer Chris Jericho and rival Sami Zayn.

Owens voiced his opinion of the draft on Twitter, echoing the sentiments of those who have followed him since his arrival on the main roster last summer:

The Prizefighter still has a ton of main event potential, but with Jericho and Seth Rollins ahead of him on the depth chart, he could be forced to wait for an eventual world championship run.

Winner: Becky Lynch

Becky Lynch spent the first year of her WWE career overshadowed by the likes of Charlotte and Sasha Banks. After being the first woman drafted to SmackDown, she now figures to be the lead female babyface on that roster.

As one of the most talented ring technicians on the women's roster, there have never been questions about her abilities. However, The Lass Kicker has not yet been afforded the chance to develop an on-screen presence aside from her awesome ring entrance.

As the face of the women's division on SmackDown, she now has the chance to become the captivating performer she has shown flashes of being for the last year-and-a-half.

Loser: Cesaro

The brand extension is tailor-made for a Superstar like Cesaro to finally break through the glass ceiling. Instead, The Swiss Superman was drafted No. 28 overall, after Nia Jax, Natalya, Big Show and Neville.

There is nothing wrong with any of those Superstars. Jax is a future star in the women's division, and Neville is a star of the future. One can't discount the veteran presence Natalya and Big Show will bring to their respective brands.

How many times, though, must Cesaro prove himself against the highest-profile stars before he is given his shot to excel beyond the midcard? He will not have that chance on Raw. The talent at the top is too stacked for him to break through the proverbial glass ceiling, leaving him in exactly the same position he was in prior to Tuesday's show.

This had to have been a major disappointment for the wildly talented professional wrestler.
