British Open Leaderboard 2016: Sunday Score Updates and Tournament Predictions
The 2016 British Open will come down to a two-horse race on Sunday between Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson.
Stenson holds a slim one-shot lead over the American at Royal Troon after carding a three-under 68 on moving day. Here is the live leaderboard:
The Swede enjoyed the perfect start on Saturday, per The Open's official Twitter feed:
Indeed, with further birdies at the third and fourth he'd already made significant progress and moved ahead of the American.
However, he dropped shots at the sixth and eighth, and it was only a phenomenal putt at the start of the back nine that prevented him from dropping another:
Meanwhile, Mickelson remained steady with birdies at the third and 13th to restore his lead. He picked up another shot at the 16th, but on both of his back-nine birdies he immediately cancelled them out with bogeys on the following hole.
Stenson finished strong, picking up two shots in the last five holes to earn him the overnight lead.
It's all set up for an intriguing battle on Sunday.
As the European Tour revealed, Mickelson has been a particularly strong starter this week, while Stenson—who hasn't suffered a blemish on the back nine since Thursday—was especially impressive on the inward holes on Saturday:
Per the European Tour, the 40-year-old spoke of his desire to win his first major—and the difficulty he faces in overcoming Mickelson:
"This is the one thing I'm looking for.
I know what I would like to see tomorrow. There's no question about it. But in a way I've got a second and two thirds at The Open, so it's not like I'm looking to pick up any more of those finishes. There's only one thing that matters tomorrow. I know he's not going to back down and I'm certainly going to try to not back down either.
So it should be an exciting afternoon.
"
He's one of the best to play the game in the last 15, 20 years for sure, and it's going to be a tough match. But I'm looking forward to the opportunity.
I've worked hard these first three days to put myself in this situation and, once again, I'm going to try my hardest tomorrow to finish the job.
Fellow golfers Shane Lowry and Danny Willett offered Stenson their support:
Yahoo Sports' Pat Forde would be happy either way:
Stenson has finished in the top four at three of the four majors, but never managed to get over the line.
By contrast, his opponent is one of the most successful pros on the tour with five major wins to his name, including a win at The Open in 2013.
Lefty has the edge in experience of holding his nerve to win and his hunger is still beyond question despite the success he's already enjoyed.
Stenson has perhaps been the more consistent of the two over the first three rounds—most of Mickelson's good work was done on Thursday—particularly on the back nine, so if the pair are still close as they head towards the finish, he can go on to take his first major title.
Prediction: Stenson wins The Open
