Deontay Wilder vs. Chris Arreola: Round-by-Round Results and Highlights

Kevin McRaeJul 16, 2016

Deontay Wilder retained his WBC Heavyweight Championship with an eighth-round stoppage victory over Chris Arreola on Saturday night at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

Wilder (37-0, 36 KO) dropped Arreola near the end of the fourth round and had his man in serious trouble but couldn't close the show. He seemed to injure his right hand in the attempt and barely threw it at all over the final four rounds of the fight.

He told the Premier Boxing Champions crew in his post-fight comments that he broke his right hand and believes he also tore a muscle in his right arm. Even with all that going against him, and basically limited to his left jab, Wilder had more than enough to handle his tough-but-limited challenger.

On the undercard, Felix Diaz left the ring thinking he had been robbed with a ludicrous draw, but a judging error was discovered that changed the result to a deserved unanimous-decision win over previously unbeaten Sammy Vasquez.

Diaz (18-1, 8 KO) was the aggressor in the fight and constantly backed Vasquez (21-1, 15 KO) up into the ropes where he smothered his opponent’s attack and was able to land big punches upstairs.

Vasquez was deducted a point in the final round for dropping his mouthpiece—it was the third time and he had been warned—and ended up being the difference in a fight that wasn’t really as close as the cards indicate.

The original verdict was a majority draw with scores of 96-94 Diaz and 95-95 twice, but the point deduction was erroneously not entered on the master scorecard, which changed the latter two cards to 95-94 Diaz.
