Tour De France 2016: Stage 13 Route, Live-Stream Schedule, TV Info for July 15

Christopher SimpsonJul 14, 2016

After Thursday's dramatic stage—which saw yellow-jersey holder Chris Froome run a section of the route following a crash with a motorbike—the 2016 Tour de France will look to return to some semblance of normality with Stage 13's time trial on Friday.

The 37.5-kilometre route takes the riders from Bourg-Saint-Andeol to La Caverne du Pont-d'Arc in the first time trial of this year's Tour.

Cyclists can win or lose plenty of ground in the general classification in individual time trials, so Friday's stage will be particularly important.

Stage 13 Preview

What makes this time trial so intriguing is that the course is not entirely flat.

Per Cycling News, the course kicks off with a seven-kilometer ascent and ends in similar fashion with a five-kilometer climb. The stage profile is available here, via Zweeler on Twitter:

The climbs throw spanners in the works for time-trial specialists, which could open up the field to those better suited to tackling the ascents.

Froome will be hoping to extend his lead in the general classification after Thursday's breathless trip to Mont Ventoux.

Richie Porte's crash into a camera bike on Stage 12 brought down the Englishman, and he was forced to abandon his bike, via the Tour's official Twitter feed:

Per Sky Sports' Andy Charles, following his efforts on foot, Froome "lost more than a minute" to rival and compatriot Adam Yates, but the race commissaires awarded him the same time as Bauke Mollema, who was also brought down in the crash but was able to resume immediately.

As a result, Froome holds a lead of 47 seconds—the decision extending the gap by 19 seconds.

The 31-year-old took to social media to confirm he still held the yellow jersey:

Per the Guardian's William Fotheringham, he said: "With about 1.2 km to go, the motorbike slammed on its brakes—the road was blocked in front—the three of us just ran into the motorbike, and another motorbike ploughed into me, breaking my frame. I just started running. I knew the car was stuck and was five minutes behind."

He added: "I think it was a fair decision, and I want to thank the jury and the organisation. It was the right decision."

Froome takes time trials seriously, as evidenced by this video from GCN:

Indeed, he looks likely to be in contention on Friday, though whether the sudden jolt of the crash or his run on foot affected him may not become apparent until his stage begins.

If he's unaffected, he could build a healthy gap on third-place rider Nairo Quintana. While the climbs should make the stage somewhat more palatable for the Colombian, time trials are not his speciality, and he's likely to lose ground.

Mollema might also fare well following his impressive performance on Thursday. David Walsh of the Sunday Times hailed his efforts, while the rider was less pleased with the officials' decision than Froome:

That could add yet more drama to what is potentially shaping up to be a thrilling showdown with the pair, with Yates revealing time trials are a major weak spot for him, per Seb Ramsay of the Manchester Evening News.

It will be hard to follow the stage that has gone before it, but Stage 13 could make for unmissable action.
