As a unifying factor off the court, field or any other playing surface, sports and the athletes who dominate them had a unique opportunity at Wednesday's 2016 ESPY Awards to speak on recent events and influence the future.

LeBron James and a few of his fellow luminaries did just that.

The telecast began with James, Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade speaking on violence and cultural barriers, per Good Morning America:

It was an emotional night, indeed.

It's fitting, though, that a night meant to honor inspirations such as Craig Sager and Muhammad Ali would feature such major names hoping to make an impact.

While arguably the most important, James and Co. were far from the only notable moment of the night.

The family of Zaevion Dobson gave a powerful speech, accepting the Arthur Ashe Courage Award on behalf of the high school football player who shielded girls from gunfire and was killed. ESPN provided the touching tribute:

Justin Timberlake was one of many to react to the presentation:

U.S. Army Sgt. Elizabeth Marks provided another moment for the ages as ESPN detailed her inspirational story. She suffered hip injuries in Iraq, only to use swimming to propel her recovery before going on to win a gold medal at the Invictus Games.

Her speech upon receiving the Pat Tillman Award for Service was one for the ages:

Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry told a heartwarming tale of his own after accepting the Best Comeback Athlete award.

Berry, a cancer survivor, battled back onto the field and resumed a key role with the team while providing inspiration to any and all on one of the world's biggest sporting stages. His speech moved thousands or more, too:

The most anticipated award of the night, though, didn't fail to live up to the hype.

Vice President Joe Biden presented Sager with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance for Sager's enduring importance to the sporting realm and even more so for his fight against leukemia.

SportsCenter chronicled the must-see speech:

Biden himself took to social media:

One could go days and days talking about the global reaction to Sager's inspiring speech on life. Here's a small sampling:

The Ali tribute closed the show, a musical offering from Chance the Rapper both perfect in its intentions and for how well received it was by the global audience:

Like Ali, the athletes honored Wednesday night took the stage and fought for what they believed in, once again proving the divide between sports and the rest of the world really isn't a divide at all.

The night of activism, inspiration and change won't soon be forgotten. Fans often talk about sports stars as role models and leaders responsible for carving out the path ahead.

Wednesday's emotional ESPY Awards saw the biggest names take the stage and knock it out.
