Craig Sager Wins 2016 Jimmy V Award: Latest Comments and Reaction
Longtime Turner Sports sideline reporter Craig Sager was honored at Wednesday's ESPYs with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance.
Sager was diagnosed with leukemia in April 2014 and delivered an emotional speech upon receiving the ESPY, via CBSSports.com's Will Brinson:
The accolade is named for the late North Carolina State head basketball coach Jim Valvano, who made a moving speech at the 1993 ESPYs before dying of bone cancer approximately two months later.
Sager, 65, announced on HBO in March that his cancer was no longer in remission.
Despite his diagnosis, Sager has continued to cover sports as often as he can, living his life to the absolute fullest possible. He was seen in action recently when he joined ESPN to cover Game 6 of this year's NBA Finals on June 16.
"I will continue to suck the marrow out of life, as life sucks the marrow out of me," Sager said Wednesday night. He also said, "I will never give up. And I will never give in."
Sager's actions and words from Wednesday resonated with numerous people. CSN Chicago's Vincent Goodwill was among those moved to react:
Houston Texans superstar J.J. Watt was at a near loss for words after Sager accepted the Jimmy V Award:
ESPN's Adam Schefter believed Sager's speech would go down in history:
"I will live my life full of love and full of fun. It's the only way I know how," Sager said.
With his keen, colorful fashion sense and indefatigable passion to cover sports in a professional career that's spanned more than five decades, Sager is indeed strong.
More than Sager's legacy as a reporter, he's become a source of inspiration for many because of his unique perseverance and upbeat attitude while facing such difficult circumstances.
