British F1 Grand Prix 2016 Qualifying: Saturday's Results, Times, Final Grid

Christopher SimpsonJul 9, 2016

Lewis Hamilton will start in pole position at the 2016 Formula One British Grand Prix on Sunday after finishing first in Saturday's qualifying session.

His Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg finished close behind while Max Verstappen will start in third. Earlier, Hamilton had completed the hat-trick in practice by topping the classification in FP3 ahead of Rosberg, having finished quickest in both runs the day before.

Here is a recap of Saturday's action at Silverstone.

Qualifying Recap

Here is how the grid will line up on Sunday after the three qualification rounds, per F1:

After a disappointing morning session, Jenson Button capped off a poor day on the track with elimination at the first hurdle when Daniil Kvyat and Kevin Magnussen produced strong laps late in the session to bump him to 17th.

Jolyon Palmer, Rio Haryanto, Pascal Wehrlein and Felipe Nasr were also eliminated, while Marcus Ericsson did not run after crashing in practice.

In Q2, Hamilton laid down a marker for the rest of the field:

After a series of mistakes, the pressure was really on Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen as the final minutes ticked down in the second session:

On his final lap, the Finn managed to secure sixth place with the only time he set in the session.

Esteban Gutierrez set his best time on his final run but could only manage 14th. Sergio Perez, Felipe Massa, Romain Grosjean, Kvyat and Magnussen also failed to the make the grade.

At the start of Q3, Rosberg quickly set the pace with a time of one minute, 29.606 seconds. In the recurring theme of the day, that was surpassed by Hamilton moments later, but the Englishman's time was deleted after he strayed too far wide at Turn 9:

However, on his final lap, Hamilton ensured he would start at the head of the grid on home soil.

Daniel Ricciardo took fourth spot, meaning he will start behind Red Bull team-mate Verstappen for the first time this year, while Raikkonen finished fifth.

After topping all three practice sessions and, most importantly, converting that form into pole position, the Brit stands an excellent chance of winning his fourth Grand Prix at Silverstone.

FP3 Recap

Here is the final classification for the morning's practice, per F1:

It took 20 minutes before a driver set a time on the track, with F1 and Pirelli Motorsport capturing the change in conditions:

Rosberg was the driver to do so with a time of 1:42.634 seconds.

The German was forced to sit out on Friday afternoon and so began the session with real intent—he quickly set about shaving over 10 seconds off that time, and as the halfway mark approached, he was the busiest driver on the circuit, per F1:

It was only then that Hamilton appeared on the track, and the Englishman outpaced his team-mate at the very first attempt.

Ricciardo's first lap of the day put him just behind Rosberg in third, and Verstappen quickly followed suit as he leapfrogged the Australian soon after, though the pair would swap positions again by the end.

Meanwhile, Button—who has never won on his home track—struggled to threaten the top of the standings as he could only muster 12th place.

The end of the session was disrupted when Ericsson's crash prompted the red flag with 20 minutes to go:

The drivers got out again for the final five minutes, and Rosberg briefly made it to first, but he stayed there mere moments as Hamilton again went quicker by 0.063 seconds.
