Dustin Johnson Withdraws from Rio 2016 Olympics Golf Due to Zika Virus Concerns

Adam WellsJul 8, 2016

The hits keep coming for golf at the Olympics, with Dustin Johnson the latest player to withdraw from the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

In a statement Friday, per Golfweek, Johnson cited the Zika virus as a concern and his reason for pulling out:

"

As an athlete, I can think of no greater honor than representing the United States in the Olympic Games. However, after much careful consideration and discussion with both my family and my team, I have made the decision to withdraw from the 2016 Olympic Games.

This was not an easy decision for me, but my concerns about the Zika virus cannot be ignored. Paulina and I plan to have more children in the near future, and I feel it would be irresponsible to put myself, her or our family at risk. I believe I am making the right decision for me and most importantly, my family.

The Zika virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, produces symptoms such as "a flu-like fever, joint pain, skin rashes and reddened eyes that may last a week,"ESPN.com's Bonnie D. Ford noted. "Strong evidence has emerged indicating a link between Zika and the birth defect microcephaly, which causes children to be born with abnormally small heads and underdeveloped brains."

Ford noted Olympic organizers have been fumigating areas with standing water, and daily inspections will occur as the games take place from Aug. 5 through Aug. 21.

Golf has been hit hard by concerns over the Zika virus. In addition to Johnson, other top players such as Jason Day, Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy will not compete in Brazil.

Johnson is the first American golfer to withdraw, but Adam Silverstein of CBS Sports noted Jordan Spieth has indicated "he is seriously considering whether playing is worth the risk."

Golf is not a traditional Olympic sport, as this will mark the first time it's played at the games since 1904.

After he withdrew, McIlroy said he has not "been dreaming about the Olympics my whole life," per Oliver Brown of the Telegraph.

Golfers could also be among the athletes more likely to contract the virus since they'll be outside more than those participating in indoor events.
