Women's Gymnastics 2016 Olympic Trials: Friday Live Results and Analysis
Simone Biles moved one step closer to securing an automatic spot on the U.S. women's gymnastics Olympic team for good on Friday night during the first night of the sport's Olympic trials in San Jose, California.
Biles topped the leaderboard of the all-around competition after four rotations with a total score of 61.85. Her best mark of the night came in the vault, which was her first event, where she picked up a score of 16.0.
Laurie Hernandez was the only other gymnast to top 60 points on Friday, as she recorded a total of 60.85. She currently holds a slender lead over Aly Raisman in the race to earn the second berth in the Olympic all-around event.
Raisman, who is looking to reach her second Olympics, placed third with a total score of 59.50. Her final mark was hampered by a 14.45 score in the uneven bars.
Gabby Douglas, who is also in search of her second consecutive Olympic berth, finished seventh after one night in San Jose. Her score would've been higher had she not fallen off the balance beam during Rotation 4.
One of the biggest storylines to watch heading into the second night of gymnastics at the SAP Center is who head coach Marta Karolyi selects to represent the team in the uneven bars. Ashton Locklear and Madison Kocian both received identical scores in the event. However, Kocian appears to have a slight advantage due to her performance on the balance beam. Lockler fell during her routine on the beam.
The five members of the U.S. women's gymnastics Olympic team will be determined after Sunday's events in San Jose. The same four events from Friday will be contested on Sunday.
