Soren Kjeldsen and Keegan Bradley both sit three shots back of Mickelson, while Zach Johnson is five strokes behind at five under.

Friday's afternoon session witnessed plenty of carnage to those in red numbers as the wind and rain intensified throughout Royal Troon.

Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler finished the second round as the highest-placed golfers from the Round 2's second wave of tee times. McIlroy is eight shots back of Mickelson entering the weekend, while Fowler is nine adrift of the leader.

The poor conditions in Scotland also moved the cut line back to four over. Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson and Danny Willett all benefited from the movement on the cut line as they finished at four over through 36 holes.
