4 Players Tottenham Hotspur Should Target from Euro 2016

Sam RookeJul 7, 2016

Tournaments are often considered an opportunity for players to spark a move.

James Rodriguez won his transfer to Real Madrid after starring at the 2014 World Cup for Colombia. Roman Pavlyuchenko and Andrei Arshavin were signed by Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, respectively, after leading Russia's surprisingly strong Euro 2008 campaign.

At Euro 2016, free agent Hal Robson-Kanu has likely won himself a number of admirers with vital goals for Wales.

Spurs are not in the position of needing to add star quality to their starting lineup, but manager Mauricio Pochettino is in search of reinforcements to bolster his squad ahead of a busy season. Midfield, defence and the wing are all areas in which he could use additional weapons.

This summer's European Championship has provided some interesting options.

Ragnar Sigurdsson

Iceland's remarkable run to the quarter-finals in France was built around organisation and defensive solidity.

With that in mind, Spurs would do well to consider FC Krasnodar centre back Ragnar Sigurdsson.

Already 30, Sigurdsson would be outside the profile of Tottenham's usual signings, but he would likely be satisfied with a reserve role.

Toby Alderweireld is untouchable in the starting right-sided central-defensive position, and so an appropriate understudy must be sought.

Sigurdsson is tall (6"2') and strong enough to be an asset in the Premier League and, according to the Guardian, Spurs are among his suitors this summer.

A fee of around £4 million is expected to be sufficient to secure his signature.

Kamil Grosicki

Stade Rennais winger Kamil Grosicki shone for a surprisingly strong Poland at Euro 2016 and could be a solid addition to Spurs' attacking options.

He provided two assists in the tournament and offered an attacking outlet pushing beyond centre forward Robert Lewandowski.

He averaged two key passes per 90 minutes for Rennes last season and played with a directness that yielded 11 goals and five assists. He would fit happily in a Pochettino team.

While not prolific, Grosicki has been a reliable goalscorer in a career which has taken him from Poland to Turkey and on to France.

He would be unlikely to shift any of Pochettino's preferred attacking three but, as a right-footed player most comfortable playing on the right, he represents a different kind of player to any Tottenham possess.

Per James Gray of the Daily ExpressEverton lead the chase to sign Grosicki, but his relatively modest £8.25 million transfer fee is well within Spurs' budget.

Erik Johansson

Sweden's Erik Johansson is another modestly priced option for Tottenham to consider in order to bolster their defence.

Left-footed, Johansson is comfortable on either side of central defence and stands several inches taller than any of Spurs' current defenders.

Given Tottenham's recurring difficulties dealing with aerial attacks last season, the recruitment of such a physically imposing defender would be well worth consideration.

The Swede has Champions League experience from his time with Malmo FF and KAA Gent, an asset that relatively few of Mauricio Pochettino's squad possess.

Having only recently joined FC Copenhagen, Johansson may be difficult to acquire but would surely be an asset as Tottenham's fourth-choice centre back.

Taulant Xhaka

4 of 4

FC Basel defender Taulant Xhaka only had three opportunities to show his quality at Euro 2016 as Albania were knocked out in the group stage, but he will still have won new admirers.

Xhaka has the tactical flexibility that Pochettino prizes among his signings. The Switzerland-born Albanian plays both in central defence and as a defensive midfielder.

His combative stylehe has collected 50 yellow cards in 207 appearances for Baselwould be at home in Tottenham's comparably aggressive side.

With only 18 months remaining on his contract with Basel, the 25-year-old would require only a modest transfer fee.

Spurs have added Victor Wanyama to their squad this summer already, but Xhaka is a different kind of player. Midfield control is fundamental to Pochettino's philosophy and the Albania international would provide enviable depth in that key area.

He is another option with significant Champions League experience too, an asset that cannot be understated for Tottenham's relatively young group.

Of course, this deal would also give Xhaka the opportunity of facing off with his brother, Granit, in north London derbies and add another interesting wrinkle to those endlessly fascinating clashes.
