US Olympic Swimming Trials 2016: Sunday Results, Qualifying Times

Joseph ZuckerJul 3, 2016

The 2016 United States Olympic swimming trials concluded Sunday night in Omaha, Nebraska, with the final two races before the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Abbey Weitzeil and Connor Jaeger paced the field in their respective events at the CenturyLink Center. Weitzeil placed first in the women's 50-meter freestyle, while Jaeger reigned supreme in the men's 1,500-meter freestyle:

On Friday, Weitzeil and Simone Manuel occupied the top two spots in the women's 100-meter freestyle, and that's how things shook out Sunday as well. Weitzeil finished the 50 meters in 24.28 seconds, narrowly edging out Manuel by 0.05 seconds.

Watching the two over the next few years will be fun for American swimming fans. Both were part of the gold medal-winning U.S. team in the 4x100-meter mixed freestyle relay at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships in Kazan, Russia, but they've yet to taste individual success at a major event.

Madison Kennedy looked to have sewn up a spot in Rio de Janeiro until the final few strokes. She dropped to third place, 0.15 seconds behind Manuel.

Caissa Casarez of WKOW in Madison, Wisconsin, was disappointed to see the 28-year-old fall just short of earning a spot in the 2016 Olympics:

The men's 1,500 meters didn't have the same drama, as Jaeger and Jordan Wilimovsky dominated the rest of the competition. They were the only swimmers to finish in under 15 minutes. Michael McBroom came in third place with a final time of 15:06.60.

As Swim Fit showed, Jaeger and Wilimovsky had a lot of time to consider their achievements in the water before the race concluded:

While Jaeger was the stronger swimmer, Swimming World's David Rieder came away more impressed with the runner-up:

Jaeger will be one of the medal favorites in Rio. He earned a silver in the men's 1,500 meters at the World Championships last summer. Wilimovsky picked up gold in the men's 10-kilometer marathon, so he's a strong distance swimmer.

Not many will consider the 22-year-old to be among the top contenders at the Olympics, but his strong swim Sunday showed he can be a podium threat next month.
