Swimming 2016 Olympic Trials: Tuesday Live Results and Analysis

Joe TanseyJun 28, 2016

Some of the top names in American swimming struggled during the third night of the 2016 U.S. Olympic swimming trials.

Ryan Lochte failed to qualify for Rio in the men's 200-meter freestyle, while Missy Franklin and Natalie Coughlin ended up seventh and eighth in the women's 100-meter backstroke.

However, one veteran of the U.S. swimming scene had a strong Tuesday as Michael Phelps earned the top seed for Wednesday's final in the men's 200-meter butterfly.

The rest of the headlines belonged to the newcomers on the scene as four winners earned their first-career Olympic berths.

Townley Haas started the night with a victory in the men's 200-meter freestyle. Conor Dwyer placed second, while Lochte finished fourth in a congested field. Lochte won't race in the individual event, but he could participate in the 4x200 freestyle relay.

Olivia Smoliga and Kathleen Baker went 1-2 in the women's 100-meter backstroke to book their first trips to the Olympics. Smoliga won the race in 59.02 seconds. Defending Olympic champion Missy Franklin placed seventh.

Another defending gold medalist failed to qualify for Rio in the men's 100-meter backstroke as Matt Grevers placed third behind Ryan Murphy and David Plummer.

19-year-old Lilly King earned the top spot in the women's 100-meter breaststroke in a time of 1:05.20. Katie Meili secured second in 1:06.17 to earn her trip to Rio.
