eSports Clutch Plays of the Week: July 1, 2016 Edition
The action continues to be hot and heavy in eSports. More fighting game tournaments. TI6 draws ever closer. The LCS continues. On and on!
Once again, there was plenty to watch and plenty to talk about, so what were the most clutch plays of the week? Read on and find out.
Vizicsacsi Makes Wonderful Play on Wunder
Martin "Wunder" Hansen had Kiss "Vizicsacsi" Tamas dead to rights. Nowhere near his tower. No help. Barely any life. It should have been an easy kill...alas, it was not (start at 5:45).
With just a sliver of health, Vizicsacsi headed to the tall grass for cover, forcing Wunder to take a fair bit of creep damage, before jumping out with a Subjugate. The crafty play turned what should have been a clean gank into a one-for-one-trade, and likely left Wunder shaking his head.
Tokido Finally Wins First Premiere Event with Perfect of Infiltration
Hajime "Tokido" Tanaguchi is an amazing Street Fighter player. Absolutely amazing. He's played against every top player around the world and, without exception, beaten them at one time or another. He's done it all and looked amazing in the process. But nothing he's ever done compares to the performance he put on at CEO 2016.
After working his way through the losers bracket, he found himself face-to-face with the man that sent him there, Seon-Woo "Infiltration" Lee, in the grand finals. Infiltration is regarded by most fans as the greatest fighting game player in the world today and, historically, has been able to get the better of Tokido in big matches. On this occasion, however, Tokido was in complete control.
After a competitive first set, something clicked in the Japanese fighting game god. Infiltration's tricky mix-up game seemed to become predictable and high-execution maneuvers were consistently successful for Tokido. He gained more and more momentum until scoring a tournament-ending Perfect on Infiltration.
Graviton Surging To a Win
Zarya's Graviton Surge can wreak absolute havoc on a team and that was on full display when b.fly took on Normund "sharyk" Faterins and ANOX at the Go4Overwatch Europe Cup. Playing a game of King of the Hill, ANOX corralled b.fly into tight quarters and sharyk nailed a Graviton Surge (check out 13:32), functionally turning b.fly into a school of fish, crammed into a barrel.
You can probably guess what happened from there.
UNiVeRsE Proves to be Worth the Price Tag
TI5 champions Evil Geniuses had a lot of people rooting against them in the TI6 qualifiers. The drama surrounding their roster moves brought Valve's disciplinary hammer down upon them and both fans and their opponents alike were hoping that they'd pay for their post-Manila Major acquisition of Saahil "UNiVeRsE" Arora. Well, EG did pay. It just so happens that UNiVeRsE was worth every proverbial dime.
This was on full display in EG's Americas Qualifier game against compLexity Gaming when he consistently delivered with high-impact Dark Seer plays (start at 7:19). There were walls. There were vacuums. There were ion shells and there were surges. Just check out the results above.
