Swimming 2016 Olympic Trials: Saturday's Live Results and Analysis
The second-to-last night of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Nebraska did not disappoint. From start to finish there were thrilling results, with eight more spots clinched for Rio along the way.
Michael Phelps won his third event at these trials, coming out of lane 7 in the 100-meter butterfly finals to out-touch the field. Phelps has won this event in each of the past three Olympics and adds that to his 200 fly and the 200 individual medley.
Maya DiRado won the first event, claiming the women's 200-meter backstroke to win her third different race at the trials. She was followed by defending Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin, who qualifies for her second individual event in Rio.
The third race went to Katie Ledecky, which was no shock, as she blew away the field in the women's 800-meter freestyle. She now has the 11 fastest times ever in that event.
And wrapping up the finals was the men's 50 free, which was decided by 0.01 seconds. Nathan Adrian, who also won the 100 free in these trials, edged out Anthony Ervin for first.
Two more races are on tap for Sunday, with the women's 50-meter freestyle and the men's 1,500-meter free left on the schedule.
