While a selection committee will finalize the Olympic roster after the trials end Saturday, a competitor can qualify for an automatic spot on the squad by finishing in the top two in the all-around competition while also finishing in the top three in three of the six events.
As it stands after Thursday's events, Sam Mikulak is the only person in position to automatically qualify. He was a force throughout the day and is expected to earn an automatic bid, per the Associated Press' Will Graves:
Graves also noted Mikulak needs to show more consistency at the start of events, as he tends to struggle early:
Mikulak finished far ahead of the group Thursday, so he looks to be the class of the competition and a key piece of the United States' hopes in Rio. Chris Brooks and Danell Leyva had strong performances as well, but they need to improve their scores in the all-around competition to have more confidence come selection time.
Day 2 will feature the same six events as Day 1, so the competitors will have another shot to earn an automatic bid. With seemingly no guarantees on the horizon after Mikulak, there could be plenty of surprises Saturday.
