Thon Maker to Bucks: Twitter Reacts as PF Is Selected in 2016 NBA Draft
After having his stock threatened by a controversy over his age, Thon Maker heard his name called early in the 2016 NBA draft Thursday, when the Milwaukee Bucks selected him with the 10th pick.
As Sports Illustrated's Jake Fischer reported earlier in the day, multiple sources believe Maker is between 21 and 23 years old rather than 19.
Twitter naturally had a lot to say about a prospect who was polarizing even before questions about his age arose.
Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio opined that Maker is a boom-or-bust type of player:
HoopsHabit's Josh Eberley had an interesting take on the Bucks' choice in light of their recent draft history with a similar type of gamble:
The Big Lead's Jason McIntyre was intrigued by the core Milwaukee is assembling:
Here's the best of the rest:
Whatever Maker's age may be, he boasts one of the highest ceilings of anyone in the 2016 class. Milwaukee may have to wait a year or two before he's ready to shine, but Maker has the physical tools to be worth the delayed gratification.
With a high motor, impressive ball-handling skills and shooting range that extends beyond the arc, Maker is a matchup nightmare. His understanding of the game may need work, and he has to add muscle to his lanky 7'1" frame, but there's time for him to address those areas.
The Bucks are taking a considerable risk on Maker. They are coming off a disappointing season and already have tall, supreme athletes on the roster in Jabari Parker (6'8") and Giannis Antetokounmpo (6'11").
The blend of length and athleticism Maker brings to the hardwood gives him the ability to defend nearly all positions. He also may be further motivated to prove his doubters wrong in the aftermath of the age controversy.
Maker likely won't have much trouble switching out onto quick forwards and guards, which should help him see the floor early in the NBA. The question is how Milwaukee will make him fit with its current core.
