Celtics Zeroing In on Dunn If They Keep the Pick
Thursday, June 23
Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reported Dunn has "significant traction" as the Boston Celtics' No. 3 pick, adding that trades are still in play.
NEPatriotsDraft.com's Mike Loyko noted on Wednesday that ESPN's Andy Katz reported the Friars point guard "seems to be the favorite" to fly off the board when the Celtics are on the clock at No. 3.
Citing sources, ESPN's Jeff Goodman added that the Celtics "really like" Dunn and California's Jaylen Brown if they wind up keeping the pick.
Dunn Would Give Celtics Surplus of Point Guard Depth
The Celtics aren't pressed for depth at point guard with Marcus Smart and Isaiah Thomas already under contract, but ESPN.com's Chad Ford broke down why head coach Brad Stevens' club could be interested in Dunn at No. 3.
"While Dunn doesn't necessarily fit a need, he would right away be the best point guard they've had on the roster since Rajon Rondo," Ford wrote.
Thomas, however, disagreed.
"I don't know what he's saying, but it's only adding fuel to my fire," Thomas said, per SiriusXM NBA Radio on Twitter.
Ford also noted that "Dunn's ability to help right now combined with his trade value around the league—most of the teams trying to trade up are hoping to grab Dunn—give him the edge."
The trade angle here is key.
While the Celtics' interest in Dunn may be real, a team's reported interest in a prospect so close to the start of the draft can generally be viewed as a leverage play to get competing clubs to up their offers.
And when it comes to Dunn, one team has consistently come up in trade rumors, as CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein noted:
"Philly has told [Kris] Dunn's camp and his agent they are trying to push the buttons to have this happen before the draft," CSN New England's Tim Welsh said (via Kevin O'Connor of SB Nation's Celtics Blog). "They've been in Providence locked in to the city talking to everyone that's ever encountered Kris Dunn. They are putting the full court press on the Celtics to acquire the third pick."
Given the uncertainty that has enveloped their thought process over the past few weeks, the Celtics should be considered the most compelling team in this year's draft based on the mystery factor alone.
