What's Next for Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins After WWE Money in the Bank 2016?

Aaron BowerJun 20, 2016

WWE encountered a landscape-changing night Sunday at Money in the Bank after a surprise finish and subsequent swerve in the company's main event created a shocking moment in just a few short minutes.

It was unbelievable enough to see Seth Rollins beat Roman Reigns clean in the main event, but having Dean Ambrose cash in his Money in the Bank contract to claim the WWE World Heavyweight Championship suggests big changes are afoot in WWE.

But what is next for the two Superstars who tasted defeat on the night, Reigns and Rollins? Let's try and work it out.

It seemed certain Rollins was set for another lengthy reign with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship until Dean Ambrose stole it from him in such dramatic fashion.

With a brand split just a few weeks away and all three former members of The Shield at the top of the company, there is the possibility WWE can go a number of different ways with its booking.

Reigns, for example, could head off and work a rivalry with someone else. If John Cena's feud with AJ Styles is done after one match, then perhaps Reigns vs. Cena could work, especially if WWE was planning on that feud heading up SmackDown's new era in the brand split.

But when it comes to Rollins, there's only one outcome for his next rivalry, and that's working with Dean Ambrose.

Their lengthy feud in the aftermath of The Shield's split was arguably the highlight of late 2014 and early 2015. It featured Ambrose at his unpredictable best, working the babyface role down to perfection.

Rollins, too, was an excellent heel in that rivalry, managing to escape the clutches of Ambrose on numerous occasions as the two went on a massive cat-and-mouse chase for months on end.

Having Rollins insist that he's never been beaten fairly in a proper match for his championship is a perfect angle to exploit, with it now looking like any potential babyface turn for Rollins is not going to happen.

But in reality, despite Rollins vs. Ambrose being a superb feud with the company's biggest prize on the line, it's painfully obvious where WWE is going with both Rollins and Reigns next.

Fans have waited over two years to see all three members of The Shield in a feud for the world title, and with Reigns and Rollins both owed a rematch, it makes perfect booking sense to build to a Triple Threat match.

The only stumbling block is that a match of that prestige would be wasted on a pay-per-view like Battleground, the next one in WWE's calendar.

It's a SummerSlam main event waiting to happen without a doubt, and with all three men bringing something very different to the table, it will be compelling and unmissable.

But to get to SummerSlam with all three men fighting for the title, something needs to happen at Battleground to set that up. Perhaps Rollins and Reigns fight to determine who will be the No. 1 contender.

That match could end controversially, too, or even in a no-contest, meaning that they both would advance to SummerSlam.

WWE would be foolish to waste one of its most anticipated matches in years on a show like Battleground. Expect Reigns and Rollins to do something different, not directly involving Ambrose, for the next few weeks before the build for a dream match can truly begin.
