WWE Money in the Bank 2016 Winners: Biggest Stars of the Night

James MoffatJun 19, 2016

WWE Money in the Bank 2016 saw not one, but two world championship title changes in a span of five minutes.

It's no wonder that the men involved in those outcomes are among Money in the Bank's biggest stars of the night.

With a pay-per-view featuring 11 matches on the card, it's somewhat surprising there weren't more contenders for this category. The three matches billed as "WrestleMania-worthy" by WWE over the last three-plus weeks certainly delivered, but the remainder of the card was lackluster, to say the least.

Sure, there were entertaining matches. Baron Corbin and Dolph Ziggler put on the best match of their recent rivalry, but the feud has been so poorly executed there was no excitement to their match.

The Fatal 4-Way for the tag team titles had its moments, but numerous botches prevented it from being a true highlight of the night.

However, when the lights were brightest, the company's biggest stars did deliver, as did one former big-time star that fans had started to sour on.

It's time to see who were the biggest stars of the night at WWE Money in the Bank 2016.

1. AJ Styles

1 of 4

WWE Money in the Bank 2016 may not have been the biggest in company history as it was advertised, but it certainly delivered in its biggest spots.

And no one delivered better than The Phenomenal One, AJ Styles.

From the opening bell in his matchup against John Cena, Styles ran, jumped and wrestled circles around the 15-time world champion.

Styles and Cena told a great story throughout this match, with the journeyman proving his chops against the man who has "buried" everyone before him. This wasn't a matter of two larger-than-life Superstars trading signature moves; AJ Styles was one, if not two steps ahead of his opponent throughout most of the night.

Styles is legit running circles around Cena... Sorta toying with him #MITB

It wasn't just his technical ability; Styles commanded the attention of everyone with his demeanor, taunting Cena and the crowd constantly. This was Styles at his best, playing a character that WWE fans have yet to see in full form, but familiar to those who have watched Styles throughout his career.

The benefit of having Styles look so strong on Sunday night is that Cena will retool himself for the inevitable rematch, likely at Battleground. Much like his feud with Kevin Owens last year, Cena reinvented himself from match to match, making himself, as well as his opponent, look better as the feud continued.

Expect the same thing to happen in the Styles-Cena feud.

2. Alberto Del Rio

Of all the competitors in the Money in the Bank ladder match, Alberto Del Rio might have been the most disliked. It seemed nary a wrestling fan wanted him in the match, much less winning the briefcase holding the world title contract.

Thankfully he did show up, because ADR was the best part of this match in its early going.

"

I don't care who wins, @VivaDelRio is the real winner of this match!!! #MITB

How excellent has Alberto Del Rio been in this?! #MITB

The Pride of Mexico delivered in key spots, showing a viciousness, determination and edge that has been missing since his return to WWE late last year. It's not surprising; the former Money in the Bank winner and world heavyweight champion has been to the mountaintop in WWE, so he knows how to perform.

Del Rio's performance in Sunday's Money in the Bank ladder match would typically be a springboard to bigger and better feuds, the types that have been lacking since his United States Championship run took a detour through Kalisto.

Unfortunately, a nasty-looking bump late in the match slowed Del Rio's momentum. Hopefully Del Rio is okay and Sunday's performance impressed the powers that be, giving him more high-end opportunities moving forward.

3. Seth Rollins

The Architect is back, and he showed on Sunday night at WWE Money in the Bank that he's still a headline act.

Not only did Seth Rollins sell every single Roman Reigns spear, Superman Punch and powerbomb like the master wrestler he is, he also countered every single one of those moves with even better combinations, like the Spear-into-a-Pedigree and the numerous turnbuckle powerbombs seemingly out of nowhere.

Rollins, looking rusty to start, was the more physical, the more determined Superstar in this match. Reigns looked like he was going through the motions, making Rollins' effort that much more applause-worthy.

The match itself seemingly lasted too long; it was only in the last five minutes that the action was back-and-forth, with the outcome in the balance. Credit again goes to Rollins for selling so well in the beginning of the match, making fans boo every Roman Reigns momentum shift.

In the end, Rollins capitalized and regained the tile he never lost. That is, until...

4. Dean Ambrose

4 of 4

The man who walks out of WWE Money in the Bank 2016 the biggest winner is your new WWE world champion: Dean Ambrose.

Without his last-minute cash-in on Sunday night, Ambrose wouldn't have made this list. Sure, he won the Money in the Bank ladder match earlier in the evening, but in unspectacular fashion.

In that match, he was outshone by the aforementioned Alberto Del Rio, Kevin Owens and even Sami Zayn. Of course, the lure of a Shield reunion some point down the road was too great for WWE to pass up, making Ambrose the ladder match victor.

Who knew WWE's idea of a future matchup would be only an hour away.

"

Ambrose is the second Superstar to cash in his contract on the same night, joining Kane in 2010, who defeated Rey Mysterio for the World Heavyweight Championship.

With his win, all three members of The Shield were champions on the same night. The idea of WWE using the briefcase immediately was odd, especially considering Rollins had just made a triumphant return.

The odds most likely favor Rollins, Reigns and Ambrose battling in a Triple Threat match at SummerSlam, if not sooner at Battleground.
