Jordan Spieth closed out the 2016 U.S. Open in rough fashion. He shot a five-over 75 in the final round Sunday at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.

Spieth headed to the clubhouse in a tie for 39th at nine over.

Here's his hole-by-hole scorecard for Round 4:

Par44454343435
Score44554643439
Par44534434435
Score35534443536

The tournament's final day officially ended what was an impressive streak for Spieth, per ESPN.com's Jason Sobel:

Spieth's hopes of defending his U.S. Open title were effectively dashed after the third round. He posted back-to-back two-over 72s in the first two rounds and then an even-par 70 in Round 3. Scoring has been low throughout the tournament, so anything short of a historic comeback would have meant the 22-year-old falling well short of his goal.

On Saturday, Spieth said he was looking to "come out tomorrow and try and pull a Johnny Miller," per GolfChannel.com's Jay Coffin. Miller shot a final-round 63 to come from behind and win the 1973 U.S. Open at Oakmont.

Spieth opened with pars on his first and second holes but lost a stroke with a bogey on No. 3. The final nail in his U.S. Open coffin came on the par-three sixth hole. His tee shot found a bunker to the left of the green, and after getting on the surface with his second shot, he subsequently four-putted to card a triple bogey.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, it's the second time he's registered a triple bogey or worse in a major tournament. Spieth memorably had a quadruple bogey on the 12th hole in the final round of the 2016 Masters, costing him a second green jacket.

GolfChannel.com's Randall Mell thought Spieth's triple bogey was an indicator of how the rest of the day would unfold:

The Associated Press' Doug Ferguson noted it wasn't the first time Spieth four-putted at a major—albeit under much different circumstances:

Maria Martin of WSFA 12 News drew attention to Spieth's choice of footwear:

Spieth made progress after the turn with a birdie on No. 10, but he bogeyed No. 11 to quickly erase any momentum. He closed with two bogeys and a birdie on his final three holes of the tournament.

His Round 4 numbers were rough across the board. According to the U.S. Open's official website, he landed just three of his 14 drives in the fairway and reached only half of the greens in regulation. His 32 putts Sunday were also his highest single-round figure of the tournament.

It would be inaccurate to blame Spieth's struggles at Oakmont solely on the rain-delayed first round, but the stops, starts and ultimate suspension of play Thursday had an effect on his performance. And he never recovered after beginning his tournament on the wrong foot.

The quicker Spieth can put the 2016 U.S. Open behind him, the better. A strong finish at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in July will help restore his confidence ahead of the 2016 Open Championship at Royal Troon Golf Club in South Ayrshire, Scotland.

Post-Round Reaction

"The story of my week is just playing the easy holes poorly," Spieth said after completing his final round, per Chris Adamski and Paul Schofield of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "You know, 11, 14 and 2, to play it whatever I played them—[six over]—on those holes, the leaders are playing them under par. Funny thing, is I felt like I didn't have my game this week."

"If I play the easy holes at even par, I'm still top five," he said, per the Associated Press (via USA Today). "That's what's tough to swallow, leaving this week is you do all this work on this course, and it was the easy little iron/wedge holes that tore me apart. But I think that's just kind of bad timing."
