United States vs. Argentina

Having lost in the finals of major tournaments for the last two summers, Argentina look determined to take the final step and clinch glory this year.

After overcoming Chile in their tournament opener, they’ve cruised through their last three matches. Indeed, manager Tata Martino didn't even have to call upon Lionel Messi from the start until Saturday’s quarter-final against Venezuela; having him in the team gives the Albiceleste another brilliant attacking option.

These numbers from OptaJavier show just how effective Argentina have been in the final third at this tournament:

Beating the hosts in a major competition is never easy, though. The USMNT have relished the underdog tag in the past and have shown glimpses of real quality at the Copa so far. Manager Jurgen Klinsmann has his flaws, although when it comes to one-off games, he’s adept at setting sides up to get a result.

Argentina may have been softened up a little too. While they’ve hammered in the goals against Panama, Bolivia and Venezuela, they aren’t the greatest standard of opponent. Spanish football expert Sergi Dominguez thinks the United States will pose some problems for their illustrious opponents:

Even so, the balance in this Argentina team seems better than years past. While Messi has grabbed the headlines for his attacking displays, Ever Banega has tied things together beautifully in the middle of the park and offered the Albiceleste a cultured presence in a deeper position that they’ve lacked in recent tournaments.

Expect his dictating of the game to be key in breaking down the assembled mass of American defenders.

Prediction: United States 0-2 Argentina

Chile vs. Colombia

SANTA CLARA, CA - JUNE 18: Eduardo Vargas #11 of Chile celebrates after he scored a goal against Mexico during the 2016 Copa America Centenario Quarterfinals match play between Mexico and Chile at Levi's Stadium on June 18, 2016 in Santa Clara, Californi

Since winning the 2015 Copa America, Chile have failed to find a similar level, with a new manager and different personnel ushering in a spell of transition. But everything fell into place perfectly against Mexico on Saturday.

They played with the dynamism and determination that has come to define this nation's football team. El Tri were not given a sniff in the match, as they were smothered by a mass of red shirts. The 7-0 win was a fair reflection on one of the most lopsided games seen anywhere this year.

Fox Sports’ Keith Costigan was impressed by the way Chile went about their business against a Mexico side on a 22-game unbeaten run:

Their opponents at the semi-final stage are Colombia, who only just squeaked through in their quarter-final. The likes of James Rodriguez and Juan Cuadrado were nullified by Peru for 120 minutes, although both showed their composure to net in the penalty shootout that eventually saw Colombia through.

The manner in which they were stifled by Peru will be a concern for manager Jose Pekerman as he looks toward the Chile game. But in David Ospina, they have a goalkeeper who always seems to produce big moments at vital times.

“He's a great, I hope he's here for us many more times,” said Rodriguez of his brother-in-law Ospina, per Sam Lee of Goal. “I love him a lot, he knows that. Today and always he's been there. I think he's the best.”

Here is a look at a crucial save in the shootout, per William Hill Betting:

Colombia will have to hope Ospina creates more heroic moments if they are to make it into the final, as Chile flexed their muscles in spectacular fashion against Mexico. While Los Cafeteros have players who are capable of making life difficult for their opponents, as a unit, the champions will have too much intensity on the night.

Prediction: Chile 3-1 Colombia
