Recap
It was a tight finish in the most lucrative race of the day, as Twilight Son eventually nosed in front of the crowded pack. An incredible ending saw a quintet of class horses all realistically vying for the finishing post.
Channel 4 Racing provided a snap of the congested late surge:
Ultimately, though, Twilight Son had just enough, with Ryan Moore ensuring a strong finish from the saddle. It meant a hat-trick of wins on the day for the lauded jockey, yet Moore wasn't completely satisfied:
Still, despite his reservations, Moore merited a special award for his prolific display at this year's festival, per Ascot Racecourse:
Earlier in the day, Moore had scored yet another win for illustrious trainer Aidan O'Brien when he rode Sir Isaac Newton to victory in the Wolferton Handicap. That came after Moore saw Churchill first past the post in the Chesham Stakes. The latter horse had too much strength for the field over seven furlongs.
By contrast, the Queen was made to wait for confirmation Dartmouth had indeed won the Hardwicke Stakes when a stewards inquiry was called. The issue arose when Dartmouth and second-placed Highland Reel had a coming together near the finish.
Dartmouth jockey Olivier Peslier switched hands with his whip to straighten his horse up and avoid a direct collision with Highland Reel. It was a smart piece of horsemanship and probably why the official finish was upheld.
The initially disputed win increased the Queen's tally of Ascot victories:
She had apparently expressed her confidence during the race, according to her racing manager, per Racing UK:
Later, Outback Traveller made impressive work of the Wokingham Stakes. Trainer Robert Cowell, something of a specialist in preparing sprinters for the big meetings, feels the horse can go even faster.
It's a belief he intends to put to the test, per his post-race comments:
Finally, Commissioned closed out the festival by taking the Queen Alexandra Stakes. Ridden by Adam Kirby, who enjoyed a trio of wins this week, the horse made it a tremendous recent run for trainer Gordon Elliott, who also tasted victory at the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
