WWE SmackDown Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from June 16

Erik BeastonJun 17, 2016

With just days until the most important match of his career, AJ Styles arrived on SmackDown, defeated Xavier Woods and established himself as the biggest winner on a night where few stood out.

The Phenomenal One needed to send a message directly to Sunday's Money in the Bank 2016 opponent, John Cena. He did just that, forcing a tapout from the most boisterous of The New Day's threesome and making it abundantly clear to WWE's franchise star that he can beat him both via pinfall or submission, whichever the situation calls for.

Styles has been a revelation as a heel, especially to those unfamiliar with his work in New Japan Pro Wrestling. He has spoken with conviction and thus is much more believable than when he was a babyface.

With a strong victory over a very capable Woods (more on him in a moment), Styles proved his readiness for Sunday's monumental clash.

Joining him on the winner's side of things was a virtuoso smack-talker and a loudmouth propagandist for your current WWE world tag team champions. Not so impressive was a third-generation Superstar whose inability to beat her main rival has defined her in 2016.

Winner: Enzo Amore

Smack Talker Skywalker once again proved why he is one of the most charismatic and entertaining characters in all of WWE Thursday night, sitting in on commentary for the Fatal 4-Way match pitting partner Big Cass against Luke Gallows, Aiden English and Kofi Kingston.

He completely overshadowed another superb talker in Xavier Woods, who joined him at the announce table. More importantly, he did not take Kingston's win in stride, immediately putting the heat back on him and his partner by reminding viewers that he and his partner are undefeated in tag team competition.

It is Amore's ability to talk that has continuously maintained his team's heat, despite its failure to capture tag team gold in NXT. It will remain that way, if Thursday's performance on the headsets was any indication.

Winner: Xavier Woods

Xavier Woods is allowed so few opportunities to work in singles competition that it is difficult to remember how talented a worker he is, especially when he is asked to fill the role of plucky underdog. Thursday night, he was clearly outclassed by Styles but shined anyway, launching himself over the top rope with a tope that was one of the highlights of the match.

Woods was incredibly effective, working with such energy that it looked as though he might be able to pull off a massive upset.

He did not, to the surprise of no one, but he turned in a performance that suggests he should be given more opportunities to prove himself in a singles environment.

Loser: Natalya

Natalya has become a lovable loser of sorts, her inability to defeat Charlotte in any form or fashion becoming a hallmark of her character here in 2016. Thursday night, a brawl between Becky Lynch and Dana Brooke proved just distracting enough to cost her the match.

At some point, The Queen of Harts needs to win a high-profile match to be taken seriously by fans. As it stands right now, she is the enhancement talent of the division, a competitor just credible enough because of her heritage and pedigree but whose win-loss record has prevented her from being a serious threat to...anyone.

That will continue into the future, especially if she proves incapable of winning the same non-title matches that every potential contender easily breezes through.
