US Open Tee Times 2016: Pairings and Predictions for Friday Schedule

Joseph ZuckerJun 16, 2016

Golfers should've exchanged their shoes for rain boots Thursday in the first round of the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.

Tournament officials suspended play a little after 4:30 p.m. ET as a result of inclement weather. Rain was a constant problem, to the extent only nine golfers were able to complete their rounds before heading to the clubhouse.

A number of top stars have yet to even set foot on the course. Although Thursday's constant delays will cause a logjam Friday, they shouldn't throw the rest of the schedule too far off-kilter as long as the rain stays away over the rest of the weekend.

Below are the tee times for the remaining golfers in Round 1, followed by the full groupings for Round 2.

Predictions

Mother Nature Won't Be a Nuisance for a Second Day in a Row

Three separate delays littered Thursday's opening-round action before tournament officials eventually suspended play. The PGA Tour showed how the heavens opened up at Oakmont:

Luckily, weather shouldn't be a factor whatsoever Friday in the sense of stopping and starting play.

According to The Weather Channel, the forecast calls for scattered thunderstorms throughout early Friday morning. The rain should relent around 6 a.m. ET. The chance of precipitation is 20 percent from 6-8 a.m. ET before dropping to 15 percent from 9-11 a.m. ET. Beyond that, the chance is zero aside from a brief two-hour window Friday evening.

The course will still be a bit damp when the first few groups head to the tee Friday. If anything, they'll probably prefer the greens and fairways to play a little slower.

Dustin Johnson Will Be Leading after the First Round

Dustin Johnson has yet to register a win on the PGA Tour this year, but it's not because he struggles right out of the gate. Heading into the U.S. Open, Johnson led the tour in first-round scoring average (68.33).

The 31-year-old was among many who didn't get to tee off before the opening round wrapped up Thursday. While that could hurt him in the long run as he plays catch-up with the rest of the field, it might be a benefit in the short term.

Johnson should be able to complete his first round unimpeded, a luxury not afforded to those golfers who have already teed off. That will help as he tries to chase down Landry or whoever is sitting atop the leaderboard.

Given how well he has started tournaments this year, Johnson doesn't need any more advantages over the rest of the competition. After knocking on the door so many times, his luck is bound to turn around at a major tournament too, per FS1:

Combining his penchant for hot starts with what will be better course conditions Friday at Oakmont, Johnson should be the favorite to lead once Round 1 is finally complete.

Rickie Fowler Will Be the Highest-Profile Victim of the Cut Line

Rickie Fowler could potentially miss his second major cut of the season. Through 12 holes in the first round, he's sitting at six over. The 27-year-old was still in high spirits after hitting the clubhouse:

It's still a bit early to project where the cut line will be, but Fowler has already dug himself into a big hole. He is tied for 56th and has the fourth-lowest score of the round. And his score could get even worse with six more holes to play.

Conversely, Fowler could improve his position a bit before he starts his second round, but sluggish starts have been a trend throughout 2016 for him. In addition to his missed cut at the Masters Tournament, he failed to make it past Day 2 at the Memorial Tournament, The Players Championship and the Farmers Insurance Open.

Fowler is tied for 92nd on the PGA Tour in Round 1 scoring average (70.62). The fact he's tied for ninth in Round 2 scoring average (69.54) offers some hope for his chances at Oakmont, but the damage might already be done after the opening 18 holes.
