Peru vs. Colombia: 2016 Copa America Date, Time, TV Schedule and Live Stream

Rory MarsdenJun 16, 2016

Colombia are likely to return to full strength for their 2016 Copa America quarter-final against Peru at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium on Friday after a weakened outfit lost their final group game 3-2 to Costa Rica.

A defeat was hardly the best preparation for the first knockout round, but Los Cafeteros showed excellent form in beating the United States and Paraguay in their first two matches, and they have more than enough quality to advance to the last four.

However, they come up against a Peru side flying high following their shock defeat of Brazil, which saw them top Group B with an unbeaten record.

James Rodriguez, Juan Cuadrado, and Edwin Cardona were all used from the bench against Costa Rica, while coach Jose Pekerman took the opportunity to rest striker Carlos Bacca, defender Jeison Murillo and goalkeeper David Ospina completely.

Though the manager's decision saw Colombia fall to a defeat, it could pay dividends, as their star players should now be fresh to take on Peru.

Somewhat surprisingly, given the clear gap in quality between the two sides—Colombia are FIFA's No. 3 ranked side in the world, while Peru are No. 48—it is La Blanquirroja who have much the better record in recent Copa Americas.

Peru have made the semi-finals in both of the last two tournaments, while Colombia have been absent from the Copa's last four since 2004.

However, Colombia are surely favourites to advance to the semis from Friday's clash in New Jersey.

They were excellent in their first two matches of the tournament, while Peru's surprise 1-0 victory over Brazil came in controversial circumstances after Raul Ruidiaz seemed to use his hand to score the 75th-minute winner, per Simon Rice in the Independent.

Peru's first two results of the tournament were also not wholly convincing as they scraped a 1-0 win over Haiti and let a two-goal lead slip to draw with Ecuador.

Per Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe, Colombia have looked the more complete outfit so far in the tournament and should prevail in their quarter-final:

Rodriguez and Bacca are both in goalscoring form, while the Colombia defence did well to keep a clean sheet against USA in their tournament opener.

However, as Peru have already proved, they have the quality to frustrate teams, and an early goal will be vital for Colombia.

Cafeteros midfielder Carlos Sanchez also picked out the mental battle as being vital ahead of the clash, per FourFourTwo:

"

Our physical aspect is fundamental, but a lot of games are usually won by the mental aspect.

I think the team that prepares better mentally for this game will make the difference. In today's age, everything is a lot more equal and the games are won by little things.

While we will try to get the best out of us physically, games are hotly contested and you have to work more on what is the mental aspect.

"

While Colombia are the clear favourites to reach the last four, Peru have shown, not just in the 2016 tournament but in many of the recent Copas, that they have the nous to play above themselves.

It is sure to be an intriguing battle in New Jersey with high-flying Peru looking to cause another upset against one of the pre-tournament favourites.
