Copa America Bracket 2016: Title Odds, Predictions Before Tuesday Group Fixtures

Rory MarsdenJun 14, 2016

The eight quarter-finalists for the 2016 Copa America are almost set, after Mexico confirmed their status as Group C winners by drawing 1-1 with Venezuela on Monday.

As a result, they avoided a likely last-eight clash with tournament favourites Argentina, who are set to face Group C runners-up Venezuela barring a bizarre result in their final Group D game against Bolivia on Tuesday.

Mexican football writer Cesar Hernandez provided the updated bracket following Monday's matches:

It would take a huge swing in goal difference for Argentina to end up coming second in their group following a 2-1 opening victory over Chile in the Copa America Centenario and a 5-0 defeat of Panama.

Chile and Panama face off in Philadelphia on Tuesday to see who will advance with Argentina from Group D, with the defending champions needing only to avoid defeat to get to the knockout rounds due to a superior goal difference.

Read on for predictions ahead of Tuesday's final group action, along with the latest title odds for the Copa.

Chile to Edge Panama, Argentina to Maintain Perfect Record

Chile are somewhat fortunate to be in the position they are in of needing only a draw against Panama to advance to the knockout rounds.

They laboured to a 2-1 win over out-of-form Bolivia last time out following their opening defeat to Argentina, Arturo Vidal netting his second of the game deep into stoppage time after Chile were awarded a very controversial penalty, per Fox Soccer:

As it is, though, Chile were handed a lifeline by the late spot-kick, and they have more than enough quality to get the point they need against Panama, who are reeling from a 5-0 drubbing to Argentina in their last match—they opened the tournament with their own 2-1 win over Bolivia.

Furthermore, Panama will be missing a number of key players to suspension, with defender Felipe Baloy, midfielder Armando Cooper and striker Blas Perez all having accumulated two yellow cards in the tournament.

Perez will be a big loss, as he is Panama's key attacking threat and netted both goals in their opening defeat of Bolivia, including the late winner, per Copa America 2016:

In Vidal and Alexis Sanchez, Chile have two genuine superstars, and they are well backed up by further quality in the likes of goalkeeper Claudio Bravo and defensive midfielder Gary Medel.

The Chilean squad is undeniably much better than Panama's, and with Juan Antonio Pizzi's side needing only a draw to advance, they are the favourites to take the last quarter-final spot on offer.

Indeed, they will surely beat Panama as they attempt to keep their hopes alive of defending their 2015 title, but it is only likely to be a narrow victory, as Los Canaleros will not go down without a significant fight.

Argentina, meanwhile, have fully deserved their two opening victories and were boosted by Lionel Messi's return last time out against Bolivia.

Indeed, the Barcelona superstar came off the bench to score a hat-trick and is set to get another run out against Bolivia, despite Argentina having all but wrapped up top spot in the group, per AP Sports' Tim Booth:

It would be more than acceptable for manager Gerardo Martino to play a weakened team against Bolivia in preparation for the knockout rounds—and he may well rest other stars like Angel Di Maria and Sergio Aguero—but Messi looks set for another run out.

Argentina are on a six-game winning streak while Bolivia have lost their last six on the bounce, and anything other than an easy win for the Albiceleste in Seattle on Tuesday would be a major surprise.
