Copa America Results 2016: Monday Group Results, Standings and Tables

Brian MarronJun 13, 2016

With the top two spots already secured, the final day of Group C play at the 2016 Copa America will primarily focus on who earns the top seed heading into the knockout stage.

Mexico and Venezuela entered Monday's fixture atop the group with two wins each, but that was not the pair many thought would emerge before the tournament began. Uruguay is ranked No. 9 in the world, but the side lost its first two matches and was eliminated.

Venezuela (No. 77) was the biggest underdog on paper, as even Jamaica (No. 46) was ranked higher heading into the competition.

The winner of the group will avoid a likely matchup against Argentina in the next round, so Monday's game between Mexico and Venezuela is still important.

Mexico vs. Venezuela

Mexico was able to score a late equalizer to earn a 1-1 draw with a pesky Venezuela side and win the group.

Venezuela continued to surprise, and the team looked confident out of the gate in a high-pressure match.

The Venezuelans used an attacking pace to get Mexico back on its heels early. This led to a breakthrough off a set piece from Jose Velasquez, courtesy of Univision:

The Mexican goalkeeper had little time to react, as Velasquez struck the ball perfectly on the volley.

The momentum of the contest gradually shifted toward Mexico, as it controlled the ball and created numerous scoring opportunities for the remainder of the match.

Still, Venezuela was able to enter the half on top, which was a promising sign, per the Copa America's Twitter account:

Mexico sent a barrage of threatening crosses to the front of the Venezuelan goal, but keeper Dani Hernandez was up to the task.

His positioning was sound all night, as he was consistently in the right spot to thwart Mexico's scoring opportunities.

Hernandez came up huge toward the end of the game, making a pair of saves on the goal line, courtesy of Univision:

It was not enough, though, as Jesus Corona finally broke through for Mexico about 10 minutes later, courtesy of Univision:

Mexico finished the game holding 66 percent of the possession while outshooting its opponent 16-10. Venezuela was efficient when it had the ball, though, as it completed 87 percent of its passes.

Even though it drew, Mexico played a solid game. It may want to bury a few more of its chances, but it was able to create throughout the night. The defense was stout as well, as its only blemish came on a magnificent shot.

Venezuela should feel good about its play too. It withstood Mexico's offensive firepower for most of the night, and it easily could have won the game. The Venezuelans have shown they can compete with anyone, but they will face their toughest challenge yet if Argentina takes care of business Tuesday.

Jamaica vs. Uruguay

Uruguay exited the Copa America with a small amount of grace as it defeated Jamaica 3-0 for its first win of the tournament.

Abel Hernandez scored in the first half, and Je-Vaughn Watson's own goal proved to be an insurance tally midway through the second frame. Fernando Muslera posted his first clean sheet of the tournament.

With Jamaica pushing for some late offense, Mathias Corujo was able to score on a quick counter.

Neither side was particularly dominant, but Uruguay was able to convert its chances, which it failed to do in its first two matches. The Uruguayans outshot Jamaica 14 to six, but the Jamaicans held 51 percent possession and forced six corner kicks to Uruguay's five.

Hernandez opened the scoring on this beautiful through ball from the midfield, courtesy of Univision:

Tremendous finish by Hernandez to roof the ball over the keeper from in close.

Uruguay was fortunate later in the second half, as this cross deflected off of Watson to seal the game, courtesy of Univision:

Jamaica seemed to check out for the last 15 minutes of play, as Uruguay started to rack up numerous chances as the Jamaican defense was left out to dry. If Edinson Cavani had been able to finish, Uruguay could have put up five or six goals.

Corujo was the beneficiary of this lapse, as he was given plenty of time to slot this ball home, courtesy of Univision:

Uruguay got the win, but it was very disappointing at the Copa America. Even without Luis Suarez, the team had more than enough talent to join Mexico in the knockout stage.

Monday marked a forgettable tournament for Jamaica, as it failed to score in three games. After an impressive Gold Cup runner-up performance, the Jamaicans drastically underwhelmed.
