The 22-year-old will continue his development in La Liga after impressing with Los Che over the past two years. He arrived on a permanent deal last summer after spending the 2014-15 season on loan from Benfica at the Mestalla Stadium.

Nigerian broadcaster Deji Kofi Faremi provided more information on the move, including the reported fee that will take Gomes to the Camp Nou this summer:

Spanish newspaper Marca (h/t James Cambridge of the Daily Express) recently reported new Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte wanted the silky midfielder as he rebuilds the deposed Premier League champions.

The Italian reportedly asked owner Roman Abramovich to snatch the player from Real Madrid's grasp as Gomes was leaning towards Los Blancos, but it's actually rivals Barca who have bagged his signature.

ESPN FC's Richard Martin noted Gary Neville's assessment of the player after the former Manchester United defender briefly managed Valencia earlier in 2016:

Marca's Carlos Carpio (adapted by Joseph Sexton) wrote that Real manager Zinedine Zidane saw Gomes as "the perfect alternative to Luka Modric" in the centre of the park and "his long-term heir in the starting XI."

The Real boss will surely be disappointed Gomes has chosen the Galacticos' fiercest rivals as his new club. The player featured in 30 Spanish Primera Division games for Los Che last season, scoring three goals.

Squawka highlighted the youthful approach to Barca's summer spending:

Gomes also dazzled during Portugal's UEFA Euro 2016 campaign and helped his nation defeat France 1-0 in the tournament's final to clinch the trophy.

The midfielder moved to Valencia from Benfica, where he spent the final stages of his youth development before swiftly progressing up the ranks after his first-team debut in 2012.

Barcelona have also recruited a player who, despite his youth, is already familiar with the pressures of high-stakes football, as Gomes has earned 13 caps for Portugal in less than two years.
