Metropolitan Handicap 2016: Met Mile Results, Order of Finish and Payouts

Mike ChiariJun 11, 2016

Frosted turned in a record-breaking performance Saturday in the Metropolitan Handicap, blowing away the rest of the field to win the Met Mile at Belmont Park.

The 2015 Belmont Stakes runner-up finished in an all-time-best one minute and 32.73 seconds, according to Daily Racing Form, despite coming from off the pace down the stretch.

His winning margin was more than 14 lengths, per Claire Novak of BloodHorse.com, and there was no horse even close to Frosted's class Saturday, as seen in this photo courtesy of the Breeders' Cup on Twitter:

In the wake of the betting-line favorite's dominant performance, the following is a breakdown of win, place and show payouts for the top three finishers:

Anchor Down12---$10.80$6.60
Upstart6------$5.90

By virtue of his win, Frosted not only earned his team the bulk of the $1.25 million Met Mile purse, but he also qualified for the prestigious Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, per the Blood-Horse.

While Frosted was favored, there were some questions regarding how well the mile-long race suited him given his experience in longer races.

Those questions were answered emphatically, and Marcus Hersh of Daily Racing Form was among those who were taken aback by Frosted's easy win:

The Met Mile is the pre-eminent race when it comes to bolstering stud value, and as Steve Haskin of BloodHorse.com pointed out, Frosted did precisely that:

While the four-year-old colt has accomplished a ton over the course of his career and will undoubtedly be coveted on the stud market, he isn't done quite yet.

A disappointing seventh-place finish in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic is one of the biggest black marks on Frosted's record, but redemption could be on the horizon.

If he performs anywhere close to the way he did Saturday in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, then Frosted's value stands to get even higher.

Post-Race Reaction

After thoroughly outclassing the rest of the field Saturday, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin discussed the significance of Frosted's win, according to David Grening of Daily Racing Form (h/t ESPN.com): "I thought we could win last year's Belmont, but it didn't work out. We ran into American Pharoah, so this is a huge performance here today. Huge. Probably the biggest win I ever had for Godolphin for sure—the way he did it and what it does for him going forward."

Jockey Joel Rosario put Frosted in ideal position to surge to the lead, and he also had a ton of praise for the impressive colt, per PaulickReport.com"He really ran a big race today, probably the best race of his life. It's very special to come here today and make all of us very happy."

Frosted's fifth career win was perhaps his biggest, and an even bigger triumph could be yet to come if he takes part in the Breeders' Cup as expected.
