FedEx St. Jude Classic 2016: Saturday Leaderboard Scores and Highlights

Joe PantornoJun 11, 2016

Daniel Berger remains in the lead after the third round of the FedEx St. Jude Classic on Saturday with a one-under on the day to put him at 10 under overall for the tournament.

Here is the leaderboard after Saturday's play:

Berger had to fight all day with the course at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, but a solid finish ensured he kept his lead.

He was one under after the front nine with a pair of birdies and one bogey, but he suffered a blow on No. 14 when he picked up a double bogey that saw his first shot find the water.

Berger answered with a pair of birdies on Nos. 16 and 17, which included this chip-in on 17, via the PGA Tour:

Phil Mickelson, who started the day in third, was tied with Berger at eight under on No. 16, but a bogey on No. 17 dropped him into a three-way tie for second place.

Mickelson shot a two-under on the day with birdies on Nos. 5, 8 and 16, as he looked destined for a clean round before his slip-up on 17.

The PGA Tour showed his birdie on No. 8:

He was able to stay clean for so long thanks to his stellar putting, as he gained 3.115 strokes on his round.

While his move was minimal, the two golfers he is tied with made big jumps in the leaderboard Saturday.

Steve Stricker went four under in a clean round to jump up 13 spots. He sank two straight birdies on Nos. 6 and 7 before adding another two on Nos. 12 and 14.

He set up his big, unblemished day by launching accurate drives that put him in favorable positions. Stricker had a 69.05 percent driving mark, which was almost 17 percent better than the average.

It was D.A. Points, though, who had the biggest day, carding a six-under that propelled him up 33 spots into a tie for second.

Like Stricker, Points kept things clean with no bogeys. He also hit three birdies each on his front nine and back nine.

While his driving and greens in regulation were average, Points got things done with his putter, gaining 1.487 strokes on the day.

If Points can put together another round like that on Sunday, there's no question he'll overtake Berger and win the St. Jude Classic.

However, it has to be promising for Berger, who didn't have a good day compared to his earlier rounds, to still be holding the lead with 18 more holes to play. If he can put this third round behind him and get back to what put him at nine under after two rounds, then Berger should wrap things up with a three-stroke lead.

Post-Round Reaction

It wasn't as successful a score as Thursday or Friday, but Berger was still pleased with his round:

Not as pleased as Points, though, who has an opportunity to ride this momentum into Sunday:

He'll have an opportunity to break a three-year drought, as he hasn't won a tournament since 2013. Since he went pro in 2000, he's only won two PGA tournaments.

Another low round on Sunday will add to his short list of wins.
