Michy Batshuayi to Chelsea: Latest Transfer Details, Comments and Reaction

Tom SunderlandJul 3, 2016

Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi has completed his move to Chelsea, having signed a five-year deal with the club.

The news was reported by the team's official website on Sunday. Per the report, Batshuayi expressed his delight at the chance to play for the Blues:

"

I am delighted to sign for one of the biggest clubs in Europe and embark on the next chapter in my career. I hope I can help Chelsea win many trophies during my time at Stamford Bridge.

Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois have told me many good things about the club, and with Antonio Conte coming in it's an exciting time to become a Chelsea player.

This is a fantastic opportunity for myself and my family, I am looking forward to playing in the Premier League next season.

Batshuayi will move to the Premier League from France's Ligue 1 after a summer brimming with speculation over whether he would leave the Stade Velodrome, having scored 24 goals in 51 total appearances for Marseille last season.

The youngster also gained major coverage in Belgium's 4-0 win against Hungary at Euro 2016, where he scored with his first touch of the ball after coming on in the round-of-16 victory.

The 22-year-old has developed quickly since moving to Marseille from Standard Liege in 2014, scoring 33 goals in 78 games for the Ligue 1 giants—an average of 0.42 goals per game.

That ratio is even more impressive than the 44 goals he scored in 120 games for Standard—an average of 0.37 goals per game—evidence of the progress he's made so early in his career.

As we can see here courtesy of WhoScored.com, the striker can also be very effective coming off the bench:

He'll be hoping to fare better than his compatriot Romelu Lukaku did at Stamford Bridge, though. Batshuayi will be tasked with reinvigorating a strike force that struggled last term, with Diego Costa below his best but still effective, while the likes of Loic Remy, Radamel Falcao and Alexandre Pato all toiled.

The Belgium international looks an ideal fit for English football. The Blues have a player that is still raw, although capable of roughing up defenders, running the channels and finishing chances from a variety of different positions. For incoming manager Antonio Conte, Batshuayi brings a vital dynamism and appetite to the point of the attack.
