Belmont Stakes 2016: Post Time, Post Positions and Full TV Coverage Info

Mike ChiariJun 11, 2016

While the 148th running of the Belmont Stakes will not feature a rubber match between Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist and Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator, Saturday's race boasts no shortage of intrigue due to its wide-open nature.

Exaggerator is the unquestioned favorite to take the third jewel of the Triple Crown after his victory in Baltimore, but a unique field mixed with Derby starters, Preakness starters and new entrants creates an unpredictable landscape in New York.

Ahead of the Belmont Stakes, here is a full rundown of the field, viewing information and predictions for which horses will finish in the money.

Belmont Stakes Predictions

Win: Exaggerator

After outclassing Triple Crown contender Nyquist in the Preakness Stakes, Exaggerator enters the Belmont as the clear horse to beat.

In addition to his Preakness win, Exaggerator finished a narrow second to Nyquist in the Kentucky Derby and impressively won the Santa Anita Derby before that. He is in better form than any other horse in the field, and it seems likely that he'll need to have an off day in order for another horse to pull off the upset.

Trainer Kent Desormeaux has watched his colt closely since coming to New York, and following a Tuesday workout, he felt as though the Preakness winner was quite comfortable with Belmont and its surface, according to Ed McNamara of New York Newsday:

"

The time is of secondary importance. You want to see him feeling good afterward. You don't want to see him sweating and bug-eyed after a work, because that would mean he didn't like the surface. When I got back to the barn, his sweat already had dried up. He's got great ability to recover. He's very intelligent, very athletic and very sound.

"

Exaggerator wasn't expected to win the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness due to Nyquist's presence, but he has taken over Nyquist's role as the favorite, which means he won't have the benefit of flying under the radar.

One person who doesn't mind that fact is jockey Kent Desormeaux, per Melissa Hoppert of the New York Times"It's a little different than usually us coming through the back door, but I've always said I'd much rather have the favorite than be 20-1."

The Belmont Stakes is by far the longest of the three Triple Crown races at 1.5 miles, but that could play to Exaggerator's strengths.

He has been excellent down the stretch during the Triple Crown schedule thus far, which suggests he will have plenty left in the tank late in the Belmont, and that will carry him to another huge victory.

Place: Suddenbreakingnews

After skipping the Preakness Stakes, Suddenbreakingnews will return to action in the Belmont, and he looks to be among the biggest threats to unseat Exaggerator.

Suddenbreakingnews ran a strong fifth in the Derby, and with seven career finishes of second place or better, he is capable of running near the front against a high level of competition.

Trainer Donnie Von Hemel is aware that his three-year-old ridgling will need to be even better and take the next step at Belmont in order to win, but he believes he belongs in the field and has a fighting chance, according to Alicia Wincze Hughes of the Lexington Herald Leader"I think my horse is the same caliber—now we haven't beaten those guys yet—but I think he's of the same caliber as the others who will be in there."

Mike Welsch of Daily Racing Form agrees and views Suddenbreakingnews as a legitimate contender ahead of Saturday's race:

The fact that Suddenbreakingnews is racing on extra rest isn't unimportant, as he figures to be far fresher than Exaggerator.

That could play a role in a race as long as the Belmont Stakes, and while it may not lead to him tracking down Exaggerator in the end, the added rest should at least allow Suddenbreakingnews to come through with a second-place result.

Show: Destin

Like Suddenbreakingnews, Destin has entered the Belmont Stakes on the heels of a solid Kentucky Derby run as well as the decision to skip the Preakness.

Destin finished sixth at Churchill Downs after consecutive victories, including a triumph in the prestigious Tampa Bay Derby.

According to Jeremy Balan of BloodHorse.com, trainer Todd Pletcher feels good about his colt due to the combination of his Derby run and the fact that he is well-rested:

"

I think Destin ran a sneaky-good race in the Derby. He didn't get away from the gate the way we wanted to. We didn't get to the position that we wanted to. He had to work to kind of get to the top of the stretch in the position that we hoped he'd already naturally be in just kind of stalking the pace. He's trained well since then, he's won a race over the Belmont track, and sometimes five weeks in between is helpful when you're taking on horses like Exaggerator that are having their third race in five weeks.

"

Destin seemingly has everything needed to be a threat Saturday, including a winning track record, an elite trainer, a former Preakness Stakes-winning jockey in Javier Castellano and fresh legs, which is something Exaggerator doesn't have the benefit of.

Destin may not have quite enough in him to beat a horse on as impressive a roll as Exaggerator is on, but he has all the makings of a colt who can and should finish in the money at the very least.
