Rudiger had a breakout season for Roma this term and has become a stalwart for the Italian giants after his loan switch from Stuttgart.
The defender has become a firm target for new Chelsea coach Antonio Conte, according to Vaishali Bhardwaj of the London Evening Standard, but the latest setback is likely to delay any potential bid.
The 23-year-old, who can play centrally or at full-back, started 29 times in Serie A last season, making his side one of the meanest defences in the country, per WhoScored.com.
Germany provided further details about the player's misfortune on Tuesday (h/t Bleacher Report UK):
A strong Euro 2016 campaign would have seen the defender become a wanted man, and he will now have to watch from the touchline as his rehabilitation begins in earnest.
