4 Tottenham Players Who Would Benefit from a Loan Move for 2016/17

Sam RookeJun 7, 2016

Tottenham have a finely balanced squad of proven quality players and are unlikely to make major changes this summer.

There will, of course, be some additions, but manager Mauricio Pochettino knows his strongest lineup and won't countenance any upheaval ahead of the new season.

This means that players on the fringe of his squad will find significant playing time hard to come by.

For some players, like Tom Carroll and Nacer Chadli, a permanent exit beckons, but others would be well-served by a loan move.

Spurs have often been active players in the loan market, seeking to help develop their young players without risking their own season.

Harry Kane, Ryan Mason, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker are all regular first-team players now, but they all spent time out on loan during their development.

A number of the current squad would benefit from a similar move.

DeAndre Yedlin

DeAndre Yedlin blossomed in his loan spell with Sunderland last season.

He made his first start in the Black Cats' disastrous League Cup match against Manchester City. Sunderland were thrashed 4-1 and Yedlin was made to look like the amateur that many of his critics have accused him of being.

Despite that shaky start, he eventually won the starting role as Sam Allardyce's side escaped relegation yet again.

There have never been question marks over his athleticism—Yedlin may even match Kyle Walker in that regard—but his inexperience is constantly betrayed by his decision making.

Sunderland was the perfect place for Yedlin to learn his trade.

Given the general ineptitude of his teammates, he was rarely the worst player on the pitch and so was not singled out for criticism as he would be at Spurs.

There is a gem somewhere in Yedlin, his uncommon pace and energy suggest as much, but Tottenham cannot be the place for him to become polished.

Another loan spell, ideally back on Wearside, would give Yedlin more time to grow into the player that he can be.

Nabil Bentaleb

Nabil Bentaleb ended the 2014-15 season as first choice in central midfield and probably sitting behind only Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris as the first names on Pochettino's team sheet.

He suffered the worst year of his still-young career last season though and is now well outside Spurs' strongest team.

There has been some suggestion that Bentaleb could be sold this summer, but his self-evident quality should prohibit such a short-sighted move.

More than seven years Mousa Dembele's junior, 21-year-old Bentaleb has time on his side and a loan to another Premier League club would be ideal.

Bentaleb is a prized product of Tottenham's youth team, but he has outgrown that level and needs to be playing regularly to continue his development.

A loan move to a club like Everton or Sunderland would be helpful for all sides and could even assist those clubs in taking points from Spurs' rivals.

Josh Onomah

Josh Onomah is another of Spurs' academy players sitting between the development and first-team level.

His impressive performance in a well-beaten team in Tottenham's Europa League away match against Dortmund showed that Onomah is becoming a top-level player. However, with Champions League to play this season, Spurs can't guarantee him time on the pitch this season.

An atypical English player, skillful and quick-witted, Onomah could even move to the continent on a temporary basis if the right club could be found.

There is likely to be a long list of suitors for a 19-year-old with such high potential and Spurs can afford to be selective with the club they choose.

It would be preferable for the fans if Onomah were to remain at White Hart Lane as another flag-bearer for the club's prodigious academy, but his growth as a player will be best served by a loan move.

Harry Winks

4 of 4

Tottenham's midfield is crowded with the likes of Mousa Dembele, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Ryan Mason and Christian Eriksen being largely preferred by Mauricio Pochettino.

Harry Winks, yet another product of Spurs' academy, may have a future among those international stars but not yet.

Winks is still just 20, benefiting from his time in the various development sides and youth international teams, but he will soon reach a ceiling there.

A player with great potential, similar to Tom Carroll but more ambitious in possession, Winks has had few opportunities to show his quality in Pochettino's first team.

A loan move to a lower league side, or perhaps the Scottish First Division, would give Winks crucial minutes of real, competitive football and help toughen him up for the Premier League.
