Allen Hurns, Jaguars Agree to New Contract: Latest Details and Reaction

Scott PolacekJun 2, 2016

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Allen Hurns is fresh off a 1,000-yard campaign, and his team has made sure the youngster will be around for the foreseeable future.

According to a Pro Football Talk source, the Jaguars and Hurns agreed to a four-year contract extension Thursday. The contract is reportedly "worth more than $10 million per year."

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport confirmed the report and added some financial details, noting the four new years have a $40 million base. Rapoport tweeted the deal includes “$20 [million] in guarantees” and can be worth “up to $11 [million] per year with escalators.”

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio clarified Hurns was eligible for a new contract even though he has just two years of NFL experience because he was an undrafted free agent. Fellow Jaguar offensive weapons Blake Bortles and Allen Robinson—who were both drafted—must wait three years to be eligible for a new deal, as Pro Football Talk tweeted.

Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell commented on the pact, per the team's official website:

"

He is an extremely hardworking player and is so dedicated to his craft. Since the day he arrived, he's been a consummate professional and is a great representative of the Jaguars in the community. He continues to impress our coaching staff on a daily basis and has certainly earned the respect of his teammates. Our organizational philosophy is to reward our homegrown players when the opportunity presents itself. Hurnsy is a clear example of that.

The 24-year-old Miami (Florida) product has been durable, playing in 31 of a possible 32 games, and demonstrated statistical improvement across the board from his first campaign to his second:

The 6’3” and 205-pound Hurns can high-point passes as a dangerous red-zone threat and possesses solid speed (4.55-second 40-yard dash) that helps him beat press coverage.

Hurns is part of a dynamic young Jaguars offense. Robinson is 22 years old and tallied 1,400 receiving yards and 14 touchdown catches in a breakout 2015 season. He was sixth in the NFL in receiving yards and tied for first in touchdown receptions, and the pass-catching duo will help Bortles, 24, develop in the AFC South.

Bortles threw for 4,428 yards and 35 touchdowns in his second season.

Hurns was excited for the future after his deal, per the team: "It's a great time now...just where things are heading with this organization."

With running backs T.J. Yeldon and the newly signed Chris Ivory as rushing threats to take the pressure off the passing game, the Jaguars will look to improve on their offense, which finished a solid 14th (23.5) in the league in points per game in 2015.
