Dettori and Moore Set for Epsom Duel
Dettori rode to victory in the Derby on the John Gosden-trained Golden Horn last year. Were he to win again in 2016, he would become the first jockey since Kieren Fallon to win the race in consecutive years—Fallon will ride Across The Stars.
Gosden gave his thoughts on Wings of Desire, per Champion Series:
The colt has tasted victory in his last two races, most recently at the Dante Stakes in early May. Nine of the last 30 Derby winners won there before claiming victory at Epsom.
Per the Racing Post, Dettori was pleased with the three-year-old's practice on the course:
Meanwhile, 2010 and 2013 winning jockey Moore will ride US Army Ranger—one of five horses taking part that are trained by Aidan O'Brien, who was denied his fourth win in a row by Golden Horn.
O'Brien also has Port Douglas, Idaho, Shogun and Dante runner-up Deauville in the field.
Moore recently guided US Army Ranger to victory in the Chester Vase where he impressively edged out Epsom rival Port Douglas, per Chester Racecourse:
Per Channel 4 Racing, he and Dettori have enjoyed the same level of success in the Derby, but the former has twice the strike rate:
The two seem likely to be in contention, as does Sir Michael Stoute's Ulysses.
Sired by Galileo and Light Shift—who won the 2001 Derby and the 2007 Oaks respectively—Ulysses has excellent pedigree and enjoyed his first victory in May at the Stallions Maiden Stakes.
Per Sky Sports, his jockey Andrea Atzeni believes he could be in with a chance of winning:
"Everyone likes Ulysses in the yard and they've always thought a lot of him, even as a two-year-old. I know it's a big step up from a maiden to a Derby, but it's been done before and he's trained by Sir Michael, who knows how to win the race.
He's a beautifully-bred horse and the couple of times I've sat on him he's given me a very good feel. He's got a good mind, is a good mover and will definitely stay. I would not swap him for anything.
"
Indeed, it's easy to see why he's not far behind Wings of Desire and US Army Rangers in the stakes.
It's set to be a thrilling race yet again at Epsom, made all the more exciting thanks to the presence of several credible contenders.
