NCAA Men's Golf Championships 2016: Winner, Leaderboard Standings and More

Joseph ZuckerJun 1, 2016

The Oregon Ducks defended their home turf, beating the Texas Longhorns 3-2-0 on Wednesday in the final of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon.

On the third playoff hole, Sulman Raza delivered a decisive birdie to capture a 1-up victory over Taylor Funk, giving Oregon its first national championship. The Ducks' men's golf Twitter account captured the elation in Eugene as Raza sunk his final putt:

Here's a look at the full results from the finals:

Gavin Hall Edwin Yi Yi4&3
Scottie SchefflerAaron Wise Scheffler4&3
Beau Hossler Zach FousheeFousheeConcession
Taylor Funk Sulman Raza Raza1UP in 21
Doug Ghim Thomas Lim Ghim2&1

Funk was two holes away from winning the title in the regulation round. He held a 1-up edge on Raza heading into the 17th tee, but the lead evaporated after Raza took the hole and pushed the head-to-head match to a playoff.

Raza looked to have things wrapped up on the first playoff hole. His birdie putt was mere inches off the mark, though. Golf Channel offered a look at just how close the ball was from finding the bottom of the cup:

Former Duck and current Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart was disappointed to see his alma mater come up just short:

Funk returned the favor by missing on a birdie putt of his own on the 20th hole to offer Raza and Oregon a lifeline. Then, another missed birdie putt by Funk opened the door for Raza to end the final once and for all.

The Pac-12 Network's Tyson Winter found arguably the happiest Ducks fan of all as Raza's putt landed:

Jordan Spieth congratulated the Ducks on their championship:

Oregon began the day at an advantage. A shoulder injury Beau Hossler suffered in Tuesday's semifinals ruled him out for the final, per GolfChannel.com's Nick Menta. As a result, Hossler had to concede his individual matchup with Zach Foushee.

While that meant Texas would need to win three of the remaining four matches, Golf Channel researcher Justin Ray thought the Longhorns were still in a good position:

Edwin Yi doubled Oregon's lead with a 4-and-3 victory over Gavin Hall in the day's first match. Yi led right out of the gate, going 1 up on the first hole and never letting up over the remainder of the round. The Pac-12 Network was happy to see Yi represented the conference well:

Scottie Scheffler got Texas on the board, beating individual national champion Aaron Wise 4 and 3. Only one hole separated the two for most of the front nine, but Scheffler began pulling away after making the turn. He was 3 up by the 11th hole and closed out the match on No. 15.

Golf Channel noted how dialed in the Longhorns sophomore was on the course:

Doug Ghim kept Texas alive with a 2-and-1 win over Thomas Lim. The front nine was equal, with each golfer leading on three holes and the remaining three being all square. Lim jumped out to a 1-up advantage on the 10th hole, but Ghim leveled the round on No. 12. Ghim then went ahead on No. 13 and kept Lim at arm's reach over the remainder of the matchup.

That left Raza and Funk to determine the national champion, and they delivered plenty of drama in Eugene.

It's far too early to talk about the Ducks' chances of repeating, but Foushee is the only senior among the five Oregon golfers who played Wednesday. A lot of talent should be coming back for head coach Casey Martin's team, at the least setting up Oregon well for the 2016-17 season.

Post-Round Reaction

"It is a special group and it's so awesome to bring it to Oregon," said Ducks coach Casey Martin, per Pac-12.com. "It's surreal. This is my home... this is a track school, a football school and a basketball school. Now it's a golf school too."

"I felt like everybody was watching, and I just felt like everything was on my shoulders," Raza said of his final putt, per GolfChannel.com's Jay Coffin. "I think I handled it great."

To his credit, Funk wasn't dwelling on the outcome.

"I loved every minute of it," he said about the final. "That's what you live for. We didn't come out on top this time, but there's going to be many more opportunities and I'm looking forward to those."

Longhorns coach John Fields was similarly graceful in defeat, per the Associated Press (via FoxSports.com): "We came up short today just a little bit. The NCAA crowned a great champion in Oregon. It is their moment, and we gave it our best. We didn't lose this golf tournament, they won it. I'm excited for them."
