Real Madrid Becomes 1st Club to Win 5 Straight UCL Final Appearances
Real Madrid became the first club to win five consecutive Champions League Final appearances with its victory over Atletico Madrid in Saturday's 2016 UCL Final in Milan, per STATS Football.
Real appeared in (and won) the final in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2014 and now 2016, having last dropped a final in 1981, when the tournament was still known as the European Cup.
On Saturday, scoring commenced with Real defender Sergio Ramos burying one in the 15th minute.
Over an hour of regulation time later, Atletico winger Yannick Carrasco came off the bench to rocket a volley sent across the box from Juanfran into the roof of the net for the equalizer.
The match ultimately settled as a 1-1 draw after extra time, so the contest naturally transitioned to penalty kicks.
Atletico decided to kick second, leaving Real to pick an end of the pitch. It chose its own.
With Real up 4-3, Juanfran lined up from 12 yards only to misfire off the bottom of the left post.
The goalkeeper wasn't even challenged.
According to the Champions League Twitter account, Real's Cristiano Ronaldo wanted the fifth shot and delivered.
Aiming just right of center, Ronaldo, redeeming himself from a relatively lackluster performance, executed his penalty to win 5-3.
Ronaldo led the Champions League in scoring (16) for the fourth season in a row.
