Tyronn Lue Comments on 2016 NBA Finals Before Thunder vs. Warriors Game 7

Brian MarronMay 30, 2016

Whether the Cleveland Cavaliers win their first-ever NBA championship will be more dependent on their play rather than their opponent, according to head coach Tyronn Lue.

Lue, speaking publicly for the first time since Cleveland defeated the Toronto Raptors in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Friday, acknowledged Monday that the Golden State Warriors and the Oklahoma City Thunder each present different challenges. Three days before Game 1 of the NBA Finals, however, he is more focused on his team, per ESPN.com's Dave McMenamin:

"

Definitely about us. But they're two tough teams. You have Oklahoma, [Russell] Westbrook and [Kevin] Durant -- a different guard. Then you have [Stephen] Curry, Draymond [Green] and Klay [Thompson] -- a different guard. It's big on who you are playing as far as personnel, things you have to be locked in on, things you have to take away, things we can't give up.

It does play a part, but it's really more so about us. If we're on the right page and doing things the right way, we're going to be fine.

Lue also said he does not have a preference for his team's next opponent.

If the regular season is any indication, Cleveland should be rooting for Oklahoma City in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals on Monday night.

The Cavaliers were 2-0 against the Thunder during the regular season, including a comfortable 115-92 win on Feb. 21. LeBron James was especially dominant, averaging nearly a triple-double with 29 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds per game.

Against Golden State, however, Cleveland was 0-2, including a 132-98 drubbing on Jan. 18. James averaged 20.5 points with seven rebounds and 3.5 assists in games against the Warriors.

Kevin Love was ineffective offensively against Golden State in the regular season, averaging a measly 6.5 points per game, his lowest against any opponent. However, he did chip in 12 rebounds per game across the two losses. He put up 20 points and nine boards a night against the Thunder.

The Thunder would be a far better matchup for the Cavaliers, as both teams player a similar style with bigger lineups. Golden State also knocked off Cleveland last year in the NBA Finals, although the Cavs were without Love and Kyrie Irving for nearly the entire series.

Regardless of who emerges victorious from Monday's Game 7, the NBA Finals promise to be epic. If the Thunder win, though, Cleveland may feel better about its chances of bringing home the Larry O'Brien Trophy.
