LeBron Signing with Cavs Teased by HC Kenny Atkinson in Trending Video amid NBA Free Agency Rumors

Andrew PetersJul 12, 2026

Speculation about LeBron James returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers has run rampant since he informed the Los Angeles Lakers he wouldn't be returning.

Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson fanned the flames on Sunday.

"You guys know there's a little free agency thing going on right now," Atkinson said during an appearance on the NBA Summer League broadcast. "That could be our real jump and you know what I'm talking about. That's exciting too."

While nearly every team in the NBA is hoping to get the all-time great on their roster this offseason, the Cavs have emerged as one of the frontrunners, along with the Miami Heat and the Philadelphia 76ers. The Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves reportedly are in the mix as well.

Obviously, James has plenty of history with the Cavs. He's from just outside of Cleveland, was drafted by the Cavaliers and brought the franchise its first championship in 2016. Returning to Cleveland would be the storybook ending for James.

"We're in the mix for the greatest player of all time," Atkinson said. "...It's exciting. I think, you're nervous, we understand how it is. Obviously, he's earned that right to take his time. Obviously, family plays a big part in it. But I know the state of Ohio, man, there's something special there."

As much as Cleveland would make sense from a nostalgic standpoint, James would also have the chance to compete for a championship alongside Donovan Mitchell, James Harden and Evan Mobley. Plus, he wouldn't have to shoulder as much weight as he would on another team.

Mitchell and Harden reportedly are on board with James coming to Cleveland, which will only make the Cavs' pitch to the four-time MVP stronger.

But it could be a while before James makes a decision, as his agent, Rich Paul, said, "there is none" when asked about a timeline for James to sign with a team. Until then, the Cavs and other teams will continue their efforts to sign the future Hall of Famer.
