New LeBron Rumors on Frontrunners for Next Landing Spot as Rivals View Free Agency After Lakers Exit

Joseph ZuckerJul 12, 2026

The NBA teams in the race to sign LeBron James continue to be optimistic about their odds of landing the 22-time All-Star, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

Appearing Saturday on SiriusXM NBA Radio, the insider repeated his earlier reporting that the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers are perceived to be ahead of the pack.

The field could nonetheless be wide open.

"Every team that's in it still believes they have a chance and is still engaged with Rich Paul on a daily basis, hourly basis on figuring out what it would look like, what the vision is," Charania said. "Cleveland, Miami, Golden State, Minnesota, Philadelphia, those are the five most predominant teams I've been hearing."

James is taking great pains to remain removed from the process. Charania reported this week that prospective suitors are sending a voice note to Paul to serve as their sales pitch.

To the extent that there's one favorite, the Cavs have arguably earned that distinction more than any other. However, ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported Friday a different organization may have made a breakthrough with James:

All of this uncertainty reflects the fact James will take a massive pay cut from his 2025-26 salary, so the finances don't preclude a contender from throwing its hat into the ring.

In the past, teams had to plan more than a year in advance of the four-time MVP hitting the open market. It was imperative to have cap space for a max deal or a pathway to create that contract slot.

This time around, the Minnesota Timberwolves, for example, could plausibly facilitate LeBron's arrival despite having a $305.8 million payroll.

With so many options on the board, James is making sure his final choice will be the right one.
