New LeBron James Rumors Reveal 'Growing Belief' This Team Has 'Scenario to Beat' in Contract Talks
There is a "growing belief" among teams interested in LeBron James that the Cleveland Cavaliers have the "scenario to beat" for the 22-time All-Star, according to NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer.
Per Stein and Fischer, one "conspiracy whisper making the rounds" is that the Cavaliers' lack of external additions at the beginning of free agency is because they want to make sure they have open roster sports in order to trade for Bronny James in the event that his father joins Cleveland.
The elder James previously informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he would be playing elsewhere next season.
Bronny currently remains on the Lakers' roster, though.
Rich Paul, LeBron's agent, previously listed the Cavs, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets as the primary landing spots for his client.
It's easy to see why James is considering Cleveland, the team that drafted him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft. He's spent the majority of his career on the Cavs, leading them on several deep playoff runs and helping them capture a championship in 2016.
Cleveland currently boasts an intriguing group of potential teammates for James including Donovan Mitchell, James Harden and Evan Mobley.
The Cavs are coming off a 2025-26 campaign in which they went 52-30, advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2018.
While they were ultimately swept by the New York Knicks, they didn't receive much production from their wings. Cleveland's forwards combined to average just 16.8 points per game on 34.4/29.2/100 shooting splits during the series, the lowest mark among all conference finalists.
The Cavs are reportedly working on a new deal with Harden, but the rest of their offseason has been relatively quiet. They brought back veteran center Thomas Bryant on a one-year deal in free agency, per ESPN's Shams Charania.
As Cleveland looks to go on another deep playoff run next season, they might be welcoming James into the mix in the near future.
