Manchester United left-back Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has signed a new four-year deal with the Red Devils.

News of the extension until 2020, which includes the option of a further year, was confirmed by the club on Monday on their official website.

“I have grown up at United and have enjoyed every minute of being here,” said the 19-year-old. “Last season was an incredible experience to make my first team debut and a dream come true for myself and my family. I feel it stands me in good stead for continuing my development as a Manchester United player.”

The defender is another player to have emerged from the club’s prestigious academy. Borthwick-Jackson made his debut against West Bromwich Albion in November and went on to feature on 13 more occasions for the senior side across all competitions.

In addition to impressing during his spell in the first XI, Borthwick-Jackson was also voted as the club’s Under 21 Player of the Year at the annual awards.

The left-back is a talent who will be tracked carefully next season with Jose Mourinho in charge. The new manager has previously been criticised for not giving prospects a chance in his sides in the past, but doing so has always been requisite for any United boss.

Simon Stone of BBC Sport thinks this commitment to academy talent—a new deal for Marcus Rashford was also confirmed on Monday, per the club's website—is something the new man will fall in line with:

Indeed, United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward reaffirmed the club’s stance in the aforementioned statement.

“Cameron is one of a number of young players to come through our academy to make their first-team debut last season,” he said. “This is something that our club has always done and promoting the academy and U21 players is something that makes everybody associated with the club very proud.”

Borthwick-Jackson looks poised to battle with Luke Shaw for the left-back slot for years to come. The teenager has shown in the few appearances he has made that he’s got tremendous energy, an appetite for the tackle and a left foot that delivers stunning crosses into the penalty area.

United will inevitably spend big money this summer, but putting faith in the likes of Borthwick-Jackson, Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard is vital for the club’s future and invigorating for supporters. It’s why this extension will give so many associated with the Old Trafford outfit another boost with some exciting times ahead.
