23 Athletes from 2012 London Olympics Test Positive for Doping
Nearly two dozen athletes who competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London have tested positive for doping in a reanalysis of their urine samples, according to the International Olympic Committee on Friday.
Steve Wilson of the Associated Press reported the news and added that the 23 athletes come from five sports and six countries.
The Associated Press added on Saturday (via NBC Sports) that eight unnamed Russian athletes from three different sports tested positive.
Friday's announcement came more than a week after retests found 31 athletes from the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing had tested positive.
According to Wilson, Friday's findings included a 32nd "suspicious sample" related to Beijing as well.
IOC President Thomas Bach commented on the new findings, per Olympic.org:
"These reanalyses show, once again, our determination in the fight against doping. We want to keep the dopers away from the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. This is why we are acting swiftly now. I have already appointed a disciplinary commission, which has the full power to take all the decisions on behalf of the IOC.
"
Those who tested positive have not been named, but they could be banned from the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
The IOC's efforts to find dopers have ramped up since Rebecca R. Ruiz and Michael Schwirtz of the New York Times reported former Russian anti-doping laboratory director Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov's account of how Russian athletes avoided getting caught at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
According to the IOC's website, the latest round of re-tests involved 265 samples, with more ongoing.
