NCAA Women's Golf Championships 2016: Monday Results and Leaderboard Standings

Brian MarronMay 23, 2016

The UCLA Bruins and Stanford Cardinal will enter the final stage of the 2016 NCAA Women's Golf Championships with plenty of confidence after impressive showings in stroke play.

The two Pac-12 schools were well ahead of the pack when play concluded in Eugene, Oregon, on Monday.

Here is a look at the standings:

Per the NCAA's official website, the event started off with 24 qualifying teams and 12 individuals participating in 54 holes of stroke play. The top 15 teams and nine individuals from non-advancing schools then competed Monday for an additional day of stroke play.

The top eight teams will then engage in match play to decide a champion. Match play will take place Tuesday and Wednesday.

Oregon finished at eight over par for the day, which nearly sunk its championship hopes. If not for Oklahoma State faltering on the final few holes, the Ducks' season would be over.

Oregon will have a tough road to win the championship at home. UCLA is the top-ranked team in women's golf and looks to be in peak form heading into the season's final stretch.

Virginia Elena Carta dominated the individual leaderboard, finishing at 16 under. Only a freshman, Carta set records on her way to claiming the individual championship, per Golfweek's Lance Ringler:

Golf Channel provided a look at her impressive swing:

Miami's Dewi Weber was also impressive throughout stroke play, particularly on Friday, which the Associated Press' Tim Reynolds acknowledged:

It was not enough, though, as the freshman finished tied for second place with Arizona's Haley Moore.

Alabama, Arkansas and Northwestern are among the surprising schools that were eliminated Monday. The Crimson Tide finished the regular season ranked as the No. 3 team in the country, while the Wildcats came in at No. 8 and the Razorbacks sat at No. 12.

UCLA has a championship pedigree, and Golf Channel's Steve Burkowski placed it among the heavy favorites to take home the title:

The Bruins won three of those titles, and they look to be a prime favorite thanks to beautiful putts like this, courtesy of the team's official Twitter account:

Stanford was the champion last season, and it is strong again. The Cardinal and Bruins, with the Trojans just a notch below, will be the two teams to beat in the final round. However, anything can happen.

Teams like Duke and Oregon were near the top of the leaderboard before both shooting eight over Monday. Meanwhile, Stanford turned in a dynamite performance with a nine-under.

The scores seem to fluctuate wildly from round to round, which should make for an exciting and unpredictable two days of match play.
