Roman Reigns and the Top WWE Superstar Rankings Ahead of May 23 Raw

The Doctor Chris MuellerMay 23, 2016

Extreme Rules definitely exceeded many expectations, and the results heavily affected this week's Superstar Power Rankings.

The return of Seth Rollins will be the biggest talking point during Monday's Raw, but everyone who competed at Sunday's event did a great job making it an entertaining show.

Several matches stood out for different reasons, but it's hard to imagine anyone not enjoying the WWE World Heavyweight Championship bout between Roman Reigns and AJ Styles.

The WWE roster is overflowing with incredibly talented wrestlers, and WWE is doing a good job juggling a lot of different storylines to feature as many of them as possible.

Let's take a look at this week's top 10 and see how Extreme Rules affected the list.

Honorable Mention: Seth Rollins

1 of 11

It's hard to rank Seth Rollins in the top 10 after only having one quick segment over the past seven days, but he needs to be mentioned because of the impact of said appearance.

Rollins' return at the end of Extreme Rules was not surprising, but the predictability of the moment did not take away from how exciting it was.

Going after Reigns indicated he will return to his spot in the main-event scene immediately, and his presence will shake things up.

In the relatively short amount of time since Rollins was injured in November, the landscape of WWE has changed quite a bit. He no longer has The Authority to hide behind because Shane McMahon shares power with his sister, Stephanie.

Monday's Raw will likely feature some kind of promo or interview with Rollins, and hopefully he has his return match against someone who can keep up with him in the ring.

10. Chris Jericho

2 of 11

Chris Jericho didn't win the Asylum match against Dean Ambrose, but his performance definitely earned him a spot in the top 10.

Many moments from the Asylum stand out, but not one was more brutal than the spot that saw Jericho dropped onto a pile of thumbtacks.

This match actually felt like it deserved to be part of a show called Extreme Rules, and it's not just because some blood was drawn.

Jericho's experience came in handy during this bout because he knows how to make any kind of match exciting—even one we have never seen before.

Y2J might take another hiatus soon, but he never gives anything less than 100 percent when he is wrestling.

9. The Vaudevillains

3 of 11

Simon Gotch and Aiden English didn't win the tag titles from The New Day at Extreme Rules, but they proved they deserve the push WWE has given them since their debut on the main roster in April with a great performance.

Their characters might be weird, but their intensity helps them rise above the goofiness of what could have been a comedy gimmick.

If facing The New Day at a PPV was a test, The Vaudevillains passed with flying colors. Let's hope they aren't demoted out of the hunt for the titles right away.

8. Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows

4 of 11

Defeating The Usos in a Texas Tornado match is exactly what Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows needed to step out of AJ Styles' shadow.

This bout was everything you could hope for and more from these two teams. The action was quick, the strikes were stiff and everyone was taking risks left and right.

Anderson and Gallows need to start looking at the tag titles so they can be known as being more than Styles' enforcers.

They are a talented tag team with a lot of credibility from New Japan Pro Wrestling, so it's just a matter of time before they add another accolade to their resume.

7. Sami Zayn, Cesaro and Kevin Owens

5 of 11

Sami Zayn, Cesaro and Kevin Owens are in the same position following their loss to The Miz at Extreme Rules, so it seemed impossible to rank them separately.

All four of the competitors in Sunday's Intercontinental Championship match left everything in the ring and ended up having one of the best performances of the night.

The opening moment, when Zayn rushed Owens and nailed a Helluva Kick, will stand out for many fans as one of the biggest highlights.

Regardless of what happens with the IC title going forward, we can expect Owens and Zayn to continue their feud for at least another month or two.

6. Dean Ambrose

6 of 11

The Asylum match may have started a little slow, but Dean Ambrose and Jericho increased the intensity throughout the contest to make it one of the best matches of the night.

They used everything but the potted plant to inflict as much damage as possible, including thumbtacks, a fire extinguisher and a straitjacket.

Ambrose is starting to gain some of the momentum he lost after failing to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship a few times in 2015.

He could easily be inserted back into the title scene if WWE wants to have a Triple Threat match between all three members of The Shield.

5. The New Day

7 of 11

Many expected The New Day to drop the Tag Team Championships to The Vaudevillains, but Xavier Woods and Big E managed to come out on top once again.

The tag team division is getting competitive, with so many teams vying for attention. That is leading to some great matches and entertaining storylines.

Even during the weakest segments, The New Day is one of the highlights of any show the group appears on, and it speaks volumes about how hard all three men have worked to make the team into what it is.

4. Rusev

8 of 11

Following a weak run with The League of Nations, Rusev has managed to rebuild himself into the unstoppable Bulgarian Brute we saw when he first arrived on the scene.

Winning the United States Championship from Kalisto in such a decisive way is exactly what he needed to catapult himself back up the proverbial ladder.

However, it might have been an interview he gave during the Extreme Rules pre-show that made him stand out Sunday night.

He was funny, menacing and embodied the perfect foreign heel. Hopefully he gets more opportunities to show off more of his personality in the future because it turns out he is pretty entertaining.

3. The Miz

9 of 11

Few people thought The Miz would retain the Intercontinental Championship with challengers such as Cesaro, Zayn and Owens, but he walked out of Extreme Rules with his reign intact.

It's great to see a veteran such as The Miz being given a push, especially since WWE seems so focused on building newer talent at the moment.

The Fatal 4-Way title match was one of the major highlights of Extreme Rules. In fact, it may have been the best contest of the night.

The Miz is so much more valuable than a lot of people realize because he has a mix of old- and new-school wrestling knowledge. He debuted when some members of the old guard were still active, but he has evolved alongside many of the newest members of the roster.

Maryse's return has given his career a shot in the arm, but it's The Miz who has taken advantage of every opportunity he is presented with.

2. AJ Styles

10 of 11

AJ Styles once again proved why he was worth elevating to the main-event scene in WWE after only a few months in the promotion with his performance against Reigns at Extreme Rules.

Styles has always been willing to take risks, but some of the spots he performed Sunday night were downright dangerous.

It will be interesting to see how he is used now Rollins is back in the picture and clearly focused on regaining the WWE World Heavyweight Championship he never lost.

Styles might benefit from a few non-title feuds so he can build up some momentum before he chases the title again, so we could see him enter into a new storyline Monday on Raw.

1. Roman Reigns

11 of 11

Roman Reigns retained the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in a chaotic and entertaining main event at Extreme Rules.

Reigns was met with chants of "you can't wrestle" and "Roman sucks," but he never let it distract him from his mission to retain the title.

Even with the involvement of Gallows, Anderson and The Usos, Reigns and Styles kept the focus on them. They destroyed the ringside area trying to defeat each other, but when it was all over, Reigns won with a massive Spear as Styles was flying off the top rope.

Reigns might not be the most technical wrestler, but when he is in a big match, he always manages to deliver. Now Rollins is back, we can expect the former Shield partners to rekindle their feud.
